Fishers, we got them.

mean big wesels, about 15 pounds. with a wolverine attitude.

Haven't seen one around the house, but hear them...very distinctive call....cat like.

I know lotsa turkey hunters that call them in. Caught a quick glimpse of one bounding across the road but have yet to see one close up that wasn't stuffed on a commission wall. Sketchy little buggers. Supposed to go after the porcupines though so that's a good thing IMO. Coming down the highway today I pointed out a tree up on a hill that the porcupines had stripped off. Most folks don't realize how hungry those prickly buggers can be. Cute, timid and curious sure, but play havoc on dogs and wood siding.

I've never heard of any around here but if they kill porcupines I say bring 'em on.

We don't have enough trees as it is. I see a lot of porcupines and like coyotes shoot at everyone I see.

I believe that pork only eats the bugs in trees.  it does strip the bark off, but only to get insects that are already damaging the tree.

Could be the pork is the best friend of trees as it eats the  emerald ash borer.  The EAB starts at the top of trees where only the porcupine can go.   by the time we see EAB on the trunk, the tree is gone.

just thoughts

We have tons of fishers here. My favorite animal to trap and have caught many of them. They will/can kill and eat a porky, but it is not it's #1 meal. Turkeys, squirrels, rabbits are top of the list for them. They are an incredible animal. Ferocious, tough, but not hard to get in a trap! Season opens in the fall until early Dec here. Hopefully I can snap a couple and get some pictures.

They strip the bark off the branches...kills the trees. Used to be able to kill them here. Survivalists claim its the easiest meal for those lost in the woods so now we can't.

A porcupine is the bane to a houndsman. I shoot everyone I see without prejudice. They have no good purpose, they will eat your tires off your tractor in the woods, eat your plywood in your camp, eat your trees and they stink!! In all the years I have walked the north woods here I have never seen where a fisher has killed a porky. I have shot a porky (or someone else has) and went back and found where the fisher ate the carcass. They flip it over and hollow it out from the belly, the only part on the pig without quills. I have shot hundreds of quill pigs from my small 100ac patch of woods behind my house and no telling how many across the road on our 1400ac lease. They like the hemlock swamps and you will find them sunning themselves in the poplar trees in the spring just as the buds are coming out. Fishers are an awesome critter, a ruthless killer and active hunter that will take anything it can overpower for a meal.

There not very common in MT and then only in the west side of the state. I have always thought of them more in the North east states of the US. As far as I know I have never seen one.
PS
I never shoot porcupines , yes their hard on dogs and coyote and they do eat trees and anything that has salt on it like ax handles and door frames but they don't bother me.

Not alot of trees out there for them D!! As far as I know the fisher is a northern boreal forest animal. Same as the marten. I am too far south for martens, they reside a little further north. Maybe as far west as Minnesota? I don't think they have as large a population there as here. I know in Wisconsin they have a limited quota for the trapping season, maybe 3 per person? Here we can trap as any as we want in the season, Oct 1 until the end of deer season the first week of Dec. Of course not many trappers left due to fur prices way down. I have caught 12 one fall when I was trapping. This just within 5 or 6mi of my house.

hunting bar in Maine and New Brunswick, I see Woods Martins often, almost every other day.  I'm in deep woods.  They 'stalk' by looking for anything to eat.  Hunting bear from a tree stand, I've  watch one follow then pounce on a grouse.  noisey eaters.

They are various colors, often mottled.

Years ago the USFS (in this area any way) promoted killing porcupines and even issued Ruger .22 pistols at times to the forestry workers in the nat'l forest here to kill on sight any porcupines they saw. Not a current thing these days. They, the porcupines, do damage more trees (popples {aspen} are their specialty) than they save IMO....at least in the midwest. Lots less of them now than 50yrs ago around here. Tuff on my log cabin still tho.....think they are after the nitrates in the preservative on the logs. Chew marks on the logs is eveidence of that. We Shoot any we find near the cabin.

Fishers have made a comeback in WI but can still be trapped in season.
