After a whole bunch of cussin' and disscussin' and
beating myself up over what caliber, I finally dropped
off my rifle at the gunsmith.

My original plan was to start off with a Winchester
Featherweight and rebarrel it with a sporter weight
barrel. The gunsmith pointed out that the forend didn't
have enough wood to widen out the barrel channel for a
heavier barrel. I was more than a little dissapointed
because I really like Winchester Featherweight stocks.

So a quick look at Stocky's Stocks we agreed that a Bell
and Carlson Medalist Ultra-lite would suit my needs
about right. It's going to be an all around hunting
rifle.

He's going to true the action, witch I think is a fancy
name for lapping the locking lugs. then install the
barrel then bed the action into the stock. He guarantees
half inch groups at 100 yards.

He wouldn't commit to a finish date, but said it would
be done in plenty of time to work up a load and shoot it
some before next hunting season.

I'll post pictures as soon as I get it back.

I decided on a 6.5x55 Swede.

I ordered a Timney Trigger last night. It should be here
way before I get the gun back.

I'm pretty sure it will be wearing a Leupold VX-2 that I
have allready. Maybe some day if it shoots as good as I
hope it does I will get better glass but for now that
will be good.

One other thing, He's going to cerecote the barreled
action when he gets it all put together.

I bet you're right Bear. I will ask him what all he does
but I am sure squaring up the bolt has to be part of it.

First thing on that should be replacing the safety though.

Surprised you opted for the swede. I was pulling for you to make a Nosler in either the 26 or 28.

Keep us abreast of the progress.

6.5 Swed...that will make CB happy.

Thanks Robert. That was a very informative article.

JSG, My goal is to end up with a good all around hunting
rifle. Kinda my go to rifle. I also want to be able to
go to the range and shoot 20 to 40 rounds without
causing a flinch that I have to deal with later. I am
not a long range hunter. The Swede will be plenty fast
for anything up to Elk at the distances I will be
hunting. As of now, my maximum range is 400 yards.

Bear, I have been beating myself up over the caliber off
and on for over a year. I hope it makes me happy too.

Also, I called my gunsmith this morning and added
threading the barrel for a supressor to the work order.
Just in case the hearing protection act passes.

You'll love the swed. same as my 260 rem with more body
taper. works on deer, bear, and 'lope.

My Swede's on the back burner for awhile....too much else of importance at the moment. Good call on the cerekote. Given any thought on nickle-boron coating the bolt lugs and guides? Like silk dipped in butter!

Wing?......I seem to remember at some point you were eyeballing the 700HE. Whatever became of that? Got that chambered in a Howdah?

Bear, I am hoping to have it ready for 'lope this year.

700HE? That sounds like something Hubbel 458 would build.

I'll stick with the lighter recoiling rifles.

Good luck with your rifle Wing, I look forward to seeing pics of it and hearing your range reports. I too am waiting for a rifle build to complete. Have waited 20 years for this rifle, and finally committed this past winter by sending off my deposit. It will be another .284Win (my favorite), and should weigh in at only 5.25lbs with 22" stainless bbl. Hopefully mine will be done by fall.

Goat, what action is the build on? long action or
medium?

Posted By: Goatlocker
Date Posted: 23 May 2017 at 04:13
Bear, it will be built on a proprietary short action, similar to a Rem. 700,
and sized for the .284Win. A hair longer than the basic short action,
shorter than the typical medium action.
Weight of rifle without scope is just under 5lbs. If it shoots as these do
historically, it will not be picky about ammo it likes.

Sounds great. Problem with lots of 'so called short
action cartridges', (like   257 R, 7x57, 284, 6.5 swed)
is they really don't fit a short action (308 length).
So I prefer these in a standard long action (30-06).

So your custom action should give you plenty of room to
seat bullets out. We will need pictures!!!!!!

The .284Win I currently shoot, was built for me years ago on a standard Rem. 700 short action. In order to allow optimal COAL with 140 grn or better bullets seated well out, the GS opened up the forward section of the box magazine and made a few other miner adjustments to the feed ramp. That short action allows me to load a 3" COAL cartridge if need be, with not a bit of binding.
So not a "Standard" short action internally, but someone better know what they are doing before whittling out an action too.

Bear, so as not to hijack Wing's thread anymore than already, gonna start another one soon I bet you'd appreciate. I'm in the midst of modifying a CZ527 Youth model in .223Rem into an 18.5" bbl, FS Carbine. Will start that thread when it's finished and I can post pics!

Will look forward to it.

Re your modified short action. I've done that. One
slight problem on mine is you can not eject an
unfired/loaded round from the chamber. need to remove
the bolt and take the unfired case out the back!!!!???

will look for you new thread.

IBD,

I really would like to give you a report on my new rifle. The problem is, I still don't have it back yet.

I went out to the gunsmiths shop last Friday and he gave me some Cock-n-Bull story about the barrel not being the right contour. He said he reorderd it. The barrel is in stock at his supplier and should be here in a few days. Yeah Right. I think he used it for someone elses build and put mine on the back burner. I will try to go out there tomorrow as that has become my traditional Friday routine.

I am generally a very patient guy, but I am starting to loose my patients.I took it out there on May 5th for gods sake.

as soon as anything changes I will let you all know.
