I'm reloading for my 6mm-06, hodgdon just came out with new
powders, talked with them on the phone in regard to which would be my
best bet, they advised that the slowest the IMR7977 would be my best
choice for trying to push a 70gr. Bullet out the muzzle at 3800fps, here's
the rub they couldn't help me with a starting charge, I'm currently using
H4350 and 240 Weatherby data. Can anybody tell me if there is a
formula for calculating a starting charge for a particular powder?

Crazy;

No such formula that I know of. I'm going to presume that you've looked at the Hodgdon on-line site, but what other sources have you checked? What manuals do you have?

I'd think the .240 Weatherby data would be close, but I sure wouldn't take it as gospel. Way too many differences & variables apply.

I know I can use 240 weatherby starting charges, problem now is the
new powder doesn't even have that, IMR7977 is slightly faster than
H1000 so guess I have more research ahead, thanks for your input and
if anybody has additional info I would appreciate your help
I have the new hodgdon 2015 reloading manual, Lyman reloading
manual, hornady reloading manual

I'd compare case capacity of water, first. find something in 6mm with the same, or slightly larger...then reduce it 10% for start.

There is was a POWLEY calculator/computer that let you calculate loads for known powders. But this is a new powder without any data? Powley needed things like barrel volume (easy to figure).

Maybe you are rushing it, could use you reg powders until published data comes out? trying to work with unknown powder is sailing in uncharted waters.

The case capacity of the 6mm-06 is a half a grain more than the 240
weatherby, which is why I'm using that has my starting data, I have 8lbs
of H4350 and will probably use that for a bit, was just wanting to find
out if there was a way to calculate a starting charge from two similar
cartridges, hodgdon doesn't have any data for the 240 weatherby, they
do for the 25-06 but the bullet weights are different and the case mouth
is different, just too many variables for me to be comfortable!

Fella's;

A large part of the problem with starting, or reduced, loads, is that the lesser amount of powder filling the case can create it's own dangerous situation. It's been found that powder charges that fill the case burn one way, but if the reduced amount lies flat in the case, the flame front can travel over the charge rather than burn it from primer to neck. And that in turn can cause what amounts to an explosion in the case rather than a progressive burn.

I'd be starting with known data before trying any experiments. KABOOMS are no fun, hard on guns and frequently very hard on flesh.

Thanks IBD, I was attempting to find a Starting load for hodgdon new
powder IMR7977, this is slightly faster than H1000, I found a load for an
80gr bullet using H1000, this would require me to reduce the starting
charge by 5% for the difference in burn rate, and since I'll be using a
70gr.bullet I believe that should be correct, just not real comfortable
with the idea of not having hard data!
