It took me a while but I finally finished my project. I
got my Dan Cave finished up so I cud start my Handloadin.
Gotta 10X16 shed out back that I was able to turn into my
room. Its still used for storage but I was able to get
rid of some junk, rearrange other stuff and still had
room for a loadin bench. It took awhile, it took some
persuasion to the BOSS but I convinced her it wud be
better there than her Kitchen table. My son and I loaded
up 500 rounds. 7.7 X 58 Jap. Cant find it nowhere. It
took us bout 3 or 4 days to load'm all up but we got'm.
Gonna be goin to the range sometime within the next week
or 2 to see if we dun any good. I was real sure not to
load them hot, so we both cud enjoy the fruits of our
labor. He's only 12, but he doent do too awful bad at the
range. Hell...... He sees a lot better'n me anyhow. So he
can tell where it hits out to bout 100 yards. I cant even
see that far. I stick with the 50. Well gonna keep my
fingers crossed that they at least go boom and come outta
the barrel. I'll have to let y'all know what happens with
that.

Texadan;

If you're shooting them out of a Japanese Arisaka, that's a very strong action.  You can easily tell if it's an Arisaka by the big round knob on the end of the bolt.  The engraving on it represents a chrysanthemum, the Japanese Imperial seal.

sounds like reloading with a 12 year old son is as good as it gets....I remember those days!

Usually, if it has the chrysanthemum on it it was Liberated and brought back in a duffel bag by a GI.  When Imported they ground the flower off as it was a symbol of the imperial emperor, and a disgrace to be sold.

Texadan;

I don't know what you're using for cases, but Norma has been importing 7.7 X 58mm brass to this country.  First place I'd try would be Graf & Sons.

We loaded 500 rounds and shot up a bunch of'm yesterday. We
had a really good time. Only cases I could find were PPU
from Grafs. It is a proper type 99, not one of the last
ditch either. It still has the AA site wings and everythin
is right bout this gun. It was liberated and brot back with
NO papers. It shoots like a dream. Course I used the
startin loads so they werent too bad. I didnt wanna go too
much bein as old as the rifle is. I was shootin 50 yards. I
cant see much more than that, specially with iron sites. I
didnt do too bad. All shots within bout a 5" circle or so.
Made the mistake of shootin my K-31 first. It beat me up
kinda bad. But no problem. We had a great time.

Japanese have generically poor vision, so Jap 99 sights are large and crude.  this makes great groups difficult...but as  senior with Jap eyesight...they are fine for me!

are we shooting cast bullets??

They worked well enuf for me to. Like I said I cant hardly
see that 50 yards. But at least I had'm all on the paper.
No cast bullets YET....... I just got started handloadin.
But I have looked into Castin. I think I'll buy a few and
use them before I go whole hog and get myself set up.
Charley was tellin me bout Cast and lots of other things.
Since we're in the same area, I can pick his brain really
easy. Gonna have to do some more readin and question askin
bout Bredan Primers to. I got lots of 303, Mauser, Swiss
and AK ammo that needs to be shot up. I really hate wastin
all that brass.

Texadan;

Berdan primer brass is a true PIA.  If you've got some, just recycle & use the money to buy boxer prime brass in the same caliber.  It's easy to tell the difference:  Boxer prime has a single flash hole centered in the primer pocket.  Berdan primer brass has two holes & you can't push the spent primer out with a normal die set.  If you try, you'll break the decapping pin nine times outta ten.

Before you take the chance of breaking a decapping pin, take a small pipe cutter & cut the head off one of the suspect brass.  And there ya go, one hole is fine to reload & two is recycle for cash.

Yup, I know all bout that. I just wanted to see if I cud do
any of it. I've read a lot on it and been payin close
attention to the posts on it in Handloaders Bench. I may
not tackle it till I'm a little more comfortable with my
reloadin, but I am gonna try it sometime. Thanks for the
advice and I will keep it in mind. ALL info I can get is
ALWAYS greatly appreciated.

In acient times i loaded  Berdan primers (1960), a waste of time and not the most relible.  this primer system was not really made to be reloaded.   As other have said 7.7 X 58 Jap (boxer primer) is imported and not outrageous.  Try PPI, so far their 9.3 brass is near perfect in every way.

But if you are in an experimental mood; you can form 7.7 jap from many cases including 30-06, 8x57, or even 270.  The 8x57 forming is simple and just means running them thru your forming/sizing die; the other will need to be trimmed down some.  Best to anneal the case necks after forming.  The 270 needs to have the neck expanded, a little more difficult, I’d use a 7mm expander first.

While the case heads will be slightly different, they will work fine, and over many firing will be perfect.

If you have Hatcher’s Notebook (great info source) you can check pg 206+231   for info on captured  Arisaka 7.7 rifles.  Some interesting  steel materials info coded into the serial number.   If you don’t have the book, let me know if you are interested and I can pass the info on.   Some where rechambered to 30-06 by army and given to south Korean troops in the Korean war?  Not sure why there were not millions of surplus m1 around just 5 years after the WW-2.  I have always suspected that the less disciplined S.K troops would have burned up to much ammo with little hits…sort of the present military concept of spray and pray!

Just thoughts from some one that wasted some of his  teen years loading those stupid Berdan primers instead of checking out more chicks!

I am looking for a "Chick" that likes to reload. That way while she is reloading I can "Check her out"
