Just got unpacked thursday from 20 days hunt west and tour.  But packed  up again tonight.

tomorow is opening day for 'old fart' deer season. 2.5 hours drive to mountains.

hunting by myself, this might be a butcher in field and pack out whitetail in parts hunt, hunting alone.

Got my sardine lunch packed, and will spot for black bears.  maybe a 'ote.

I saw that....figured Arkansas...probably revenge for all the times the farmer helped it out of a fence or something.

Sure it's a tragedy for the guys family but that story just begs for punchlines!

Last line of that story on ABC was priceless. The deer has not yet been found!

FFS! We have a mankiller on the loose here people! He's armed and dangerous!

Oh yeah, good luck Bear.

really not mush info in the report.

We have had people shoot a deer and think it is dead and start to gut when deer wakes up.  I always check the eyes.  eyes closed der alive.

Once shot a whitetail, it went down and looked dead 5 minutes later.  when I walked up it's eyes were closed.  so I took a long branch and wacked it in the face 4-5 times...no reaction.  BUT, I thought it might still be alive, so I decided to shoot it again.  With the scope all I could see was fur, and fired from10 foot at the neck trying to not spoil meat.  Well with the scope height I issed by  a hair.AND THE DEER JUMPED UP AND RAN AWAY AT FULL SPEED.

I shot it again at 100 yards  in the spine as it ran fast straight down hill.

Can't help but think about whaat would have happened if I'd have straddled that dder and it awoke.

I always check the eye, now.

Thinking I related my cold weather deer story before, but here goes it anyway. Temp was about -15ish and windy as can be without rotation in the sky. Doing some spot and stalk as generally speaking, deer find cover and bed up in such conditions. Crested a bench and a few doe jumped out of the thick laurel and vanished over the side of the bench. I walked up to count beds and saw a nice little spike buck just laying there with about 4" of snow on it....it never twitched and it's eyes seemed to be open and not moving. I figured someone hit it with a bad shot and it stiffened up and died there, but to be sure I reached out with the muzzle of my old 8mm Mauser and gave it a nudge.....Well it wasn't dead. It jumped up and the muzzle of my 8mm flew up and back at my face with authority and the front sight blade gashed me between the eyes hard. Still carry the scar at the crease of the brow. Lesson learned. Sometimes it's better to spend the extra 50 cents to a dollar on the steak then be the one served up rare.

...oh yeah! thats gonna hurt!

I didn't know that about the closed eyes thing. Thanks for sharing that.

JSG,
Was that little buck just sleeping real soundly?

Nope, eyes were open. All dark eye and apparently staring at me all motionless...not even a blink. That's why I thought for sure it was dead. Ever get a deep facial cut? At -15 and in that wind I had frozen blood cycles all of me like some bizarre Halloween make-up.....wasn't pretty. The gash wasn't that painful but the bruised pride took awhile to heal.
