Well 3wks ago I got me a lab pup, he's a chocolate lab, his dad weighed 90lbs, mom weighed 76lbs, he's very calm and laid back most of the time, he was 6 weeks old when we brought him home, he's never cried or acted like he missed his siblings, if he whined he wanted food, water, or to go outside to relieve himself, he's only had a couple of accidents in the house and those were all on newspapers, I see alot of potential in him, can't wait to start his training, right now we just play fetch with a ball, been a very long time since I've had a real dog!

Crazy, Enjoy that puppyhood while you can. At least the size. I've got a black one that was born the first week in August. He's crowding 80 pounds already. Labs seem to have puppy tendencies until they are about 3 years old. Mine all seem to cost me more in mass destruction than they do in food until they are three.

BTW. New security idea for the pentagon. Turn out all the lights and turn about a dozen black labs loose at night. Any body crazy enough to get in is bound to trip over one in the dark and break their a$$. RD

took the new pup to the park so he could get use to new sights and sounds, sorta let him play in the lake if he wanted to, well he did! got in as far as his back feet then got out! I thought not bad for a 10wk old pup can't expect too much from him, so i was watching him and he really hadn't shown alot of interest in the ducks that live at the park, then almost like somebody threw a switch, he suddenly takes notice of a duck thats about 10yds or so swimming around! he starts a slow stalk, and then gets to the waters edge, I'm thinking he'll give up and come back, he stares at the duck for just a second then his whole body goes tense and he launches himself out into the lake, prettiest entry into water I've ever seen!(probably cause it's my dog) course after he bobs back to the surface he turns back towards shore and forgets about the duck! but hey he's only 10wks old!

hoping to post pic of him soon!

Why isn't a $100 pair if Nike running shoes still worth at least $50 after a lab chews-up one of them? Holsters, Motorcycle helmets, on and on, endless destruction of all you hold dear except when they get into the trash. Still my favorite type of hunting dog.

Let's see. In the last week....a $25.00 belt, all the belt loops off of my canvas insulated pants, at least 4 rolls of toilet paper, straightened out a ring on choke collar on the way into the vet office (20 minute chase in and out of traffic), laces on my knock'n around shoes, one sock from 3 different pairs, one handkerchief and something yet to be determined that he's chewing on right now. Only good thing is that he's brought in about a dozen kindling sticks off the wood pile.  But you can't have him. He's all mine. RD

Well, maybe my 18mth Irish Setter isn't so bad after all.......for a time there I felt I had another "Marly" on my hands......now with all your confessions about your pups, well, I ain't had it so real bad......'cept for when she totally destroyed SFC Jason's mounted ruffed grouse just before he left for this last tour.........a grouse he shot when he was 11yrs old....but hey, she's a bird dog I guess......he forgave her that transgression.....he too has a young dog.....2yr old golden retriever who is waiting for his return..........now if only my Irish Setter would stop going deaf when she is over 50ft away.......

Went dove hunting over the last week, for the first time, In a long time took a bird dog with me! when I shot the first bird, he was looking for it but didn't quite have the right spot! however breeze kicked up a little bit and he winded the bird, went straight for it! mouthed it a couple times and with encouragement from me, he finally picked it up and brought it to me! later he came upon a wounded bird I had shot! he mouthed it and didn't get a hold of it! this bird got airborne, and I shot it again! after this he started to learn fast, I shot another bird later that also tried to get airborne and he caught this one coming off the ground! being a quick learner he started pouncing them, holding them on the ground until he could pick them up! my boy shot a bird that when he went to pick it up it took off, but it couldn't seem to get much altitude, huey ran in, batted the bird to the ground and brought it to me! very proud of my 7mos old pup he's working out great!

my new pup on his first hunting trip

a very successful retrieval

Crazy, Very nice dog and a good job by the trainer. You should be very proud of him.

On my first Pheasant hunt with my yellow lab Rocky many years ago he retrieved a couple of birds and then I hit one that glided to a landing and ran into a standing corn field. Rocky went after him in the corn but didn't come back for almost an hour. I called and called for him and was in a panic that he might be lost. He finally showed up with the bird, er... sort of with the bird. He had a very distended belly and a feather at the corner of his mouth. He never ate one again in all the years I had him but his first hunt was a mix of good dog and full dog. RD
