that is just a bit.  I need a fixture that holds the rifle bolt and then lets it be uniformly indexed to make lots of swirls with a tool like that you found D.

I was looking for something like this https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1006553526

But this is discontinued; because it was terrible quality.

Brownells has a good quality fixture. If I remember right it is pretty spendy. It has indexing marks so you can easily get the same distance between rows.

I have done flat surfaces and the brush kit from Brownells works good. It is easy to put too much down force on the brush and spread it out making the swirls bigger than I wanted. Patients helps a lot.

I really like the look of a jeweled bolt. The smaller the swirels the better in my opinion.

Brownels dropped that fixture, but that is kind of what I'm looking for.

I have read there is very little difference in performance, Mostly for looks now, and costs more.

I always thought it was just for looks. How does it help performance?

Jeweled bolts are costly for new gun production.  Carved stocks are alos 'out'.  Marlin M39 lever 22 use to come with a nice carved squirrel on the butt stock.  But, people have been taught by gun rags that plastic is better and beautiful!!!!Cry

Jewel bolts hold a tiny bit more lubricant I hear is the purpose.

Come on bear, I like plastic and it has nothing to do with looks...
I'm still just as ugly.Big smile

Engine turning works to reduce friction, like D says holds lube.  also means less surface to surface contact.  but really is for looks.

ever look at Spirit of St. Louis?  that plane had the forward nacelle all engine turned......cool.

Thanks for the info guys.

I really like the looks of an engine turned bolt. Especially with small circles.

Right IBD,  that is the way it is done.   but he has a 5c spin index and a 24"mill cross-slide.  And he made a spud for the bolt, on a lathe.

sort of was looking for  a jig/fixture already made.

Taking an ounce or two off the weight.
Maybe make the bolt a smidgen stiffer.

It is more of a polishing effect, doesn't remove much metal.  Fluting does lighten the bolt.

Found a place that does bolt engin turning, might send a bolt to them after hunting season.  will post results.

Those things look nice...not sure you'll find that kinda stuff on many guns at the national matches or at the Whittington Center as I doubt that the enhance much more than the gunplumbers pockets.
