saw this on another forum. says a lot about the "need" for all of these "fancy" bullets!

i will put in a qualifier: i cannot vouch for the authenticity of this email; i.e., whether or not it actually came from hornady. the grammar in the email is rather scary, but it could be authentic. the points made do however seem valid to me.

-----------------

I recently E-mailed Hornady, asking them "why no Interbond offerings in .308Win. ??" Here is the respones I recieved, wich I though was Honest and Informative. Thought I would share it with you guys in case you were wondering the same thing.

Part of the answer is because the 308 doesn't need an InterBond in order
to perform. Now having said that I have to qualify it. I fully realize
"need" has nothing to do with what customers want to buy but at some
point I think a reputable manufacturer has a responsibility to not take
advantage of the marketing being presented just to extract more money
from the customer. The InterBond was developed to address a specific set
of circumstance, namely, high velocity cartridges shooting lighter
weight bullets where it was almost impossible to make a bullet hold
together well enough to penetrate deeply enough. The 308 doesn't have
that problem. Velocities are relatively low, it is reasonably easy to
build bullets that Performa virtually flawlessly with out the
significant expense needed to build the bonded bullet. Additionally the
bonded bullet, because it is designed for some extreme performance
demands is necessarily tougher than can be depended upon to expand
reliably over the ranges the 308 will be used. Finally, I know we'll
have to do it anyway but since we can't keep up right now it just seems
we ought to put the emphasis on the mags until production can keep up.

Deffinitley a hoax message.  If this were truely written by Hornady, it would not say "I" and "we".  When refering to Hornady the message would (or should) say "Hornady" or "it".  The message would (or should) be written in the third person.

While I agree with what was written, someone wrote that up claiming to be "Hornady" or he is implying that he represents the company.  It's amazing how grammer can give someone away.

Y'all shoot straight!!!

Makes sense. Don't know who wrote it, but it would theoretically make sense. I say theoretically as many of the Criuse missle/ICBM mags. are being used with 165-180 gr. projectiles to enhance their FPS for press purposes. So therefor, a heavier constructed bullet would be needed. Hence the reason Nosler has increased jacket thickness on the Ballistic Tip. A standard .308/30'06 probably wouldn't benefit from it. The good old interlocks would still be fine.

Also, they are talking of the .308 WIN cartridge not caliber. I think it is fair to say the .308 WIN doesn't need it. Since they are talking of the .308 WIN regarding the Interbond in that loading and not the caliber in general, and the fact that they do make a 150, 165, and 180 Interbond, I think it may be a responce from Hornady, but again, it is reference to the .308 WIN 'needing' an Interbond, not the entire .308 caliber range of cartridges in general.

if it is indeed from hornady, i have to say that i find their honest and frank reply a refreshing change from the hype and marketing that you see a lot of these days.

I have a friend that works for Hornady, and that is exactly the type of message I would expect to recieve from them. They have admitted for years that they are building bullets that are more than most need, or have any use for. Also, that thiers, and other manufacturers tolarances aren't all that close. Weigh a box of bullets sometimefrom any manufacturer. Then weigh some from a custom maker. Gonna be pretty much the same deviation, unless the custom maker has someone sitting in front of an electronic scale all day.
