Well... I got the 25 with a 12ga. I use the 28 for the challege. I know for sure I give up at least 2 birds a round because of it. I just like it cause it points like a BB gun.

Well another season is about to start. I showed up tonight for a couple of practice rounds. I was greeted with two boxes of shells. I didn't get to go to the rewards-end of your banquet last year due to a bear hunting conflict. A nice surprise for being top gun on my team. I shot two 23's. Looking back at the beginning of this thread I think I'm off to a much better start. I really should have read this again before going. Both rounds I missed the first two birds. I lifted my head... I also shot someone elses bird. I was on station one couldn't hear the guy on 5 that I was following I saw a bird and heard a shot but it was from the other trap house so I thoght he missed. I said pull and shot. To my embarassment the guy on 5 had let that one go for some reason. In all my years I've never done anything like that before. He shot the next one and the guy on 2 shot after that to get back in order. Sheesh.

Deaddog, Glad things are going well for you. My night at the trap range was a little rough tonite. A couple of weeks ago I took my Stevens 335, that I restored last year, to the trap range to show it to a Stevens SxS collector. One of the guys on my trap team had the extractor and attendant parts drop right out of his Rem 1100 on the 5th shot. I had just dropped the 4th bird on station two the previous shot. I handed him my 870 and went in and got the old SxS. The round went on and I broke the next 21 straight with it for a final score of 24 from the 16. The handicap from 23 didn't go quite as good but I managed a 19. Actually ran the last 10 after I switched to the full choke barrel. Evidently the mod barrel is a bit too open for the handicap distance. At any rate I took it out again tonight and things were going well until i had a FTF on the 3rd station and another 3 shots later. Both times the primer was barely dented. This was a little hard on my concentration and I ended the 16 yard round with a 21. Tonight the team handicap was at 20 yards. I had dropped two birds out of the first 10 and then FTFs started cropping up about every third shot. On station 5 she gave up the ghost. The top snap tab broke completetly off and the gun failed to lock up. Luckily Numrich shows them in stock so I ordered a new top snap, nut, lock nut and all attendant springs. I hate to tear into this thing again as it's a pia to strip it down and put it all back together but such is the plight of the antique double gun owner. Maybe it's just not built for the rigors of trap shooting. Or is just suffering from metal fatigue. When I got it it had a broken firing pin on one barrel and a broken hammer on the other barrel. Don't know if I should keep shooting trap with it after I get it fixed or just save it for an occasional round of skeet or sporting clays in the SxS antique classes. This gun belonged to the father of my parents best man. It was given to me by one of my best friends as a "wall hanger" with out him realizing that I had a family connection of sorts to the gun. RD

Hey RD, I don't feel so bad now. I like to try different guns but for league work it almost takes a dedicated gun. When your team mates says "you wouldn't have missed that one with your Model 12" you start to ask yourself if you should leave the fun guns to practice rounds?

If this was a regular league I'd be in trouble but this is a social kind of thing. Nobody, at least on my team, takes it very serious. I shot a 43 of 50 acouple of weeks ago and tied for high gun on the team. WE shoot a 16 yard round every week and then a handicap based on our average. These aren't even registered targets. I actually shot the old SxS better than my 870 on the first night I used it. If this was serious business I probably wouldn't be there. RD

I hadn't been trap shooting for a bunch of years....then a guy invited me to come shoot a fun round at his club. So, my old standby trap gun is just a field grade M870/rib/28" Mod choke which I took with me but also I took my M97 30"F/C too. I used the 97 first and broke 23 and some of the shooters had these adj stock, single shots, adj rib etc and didn't do much better.....they had to ask what kind of gun was I shooting...they knew it was a pump but none were old 'nuff to even recognize for what it was. Then I tried the 870 and only broke 22...so back to the 97 and broke 21. All this at 16yds mind you. The 97 kinda points itself, same as my Red Label. I might gotta start trap shooting again......& give that 9000G a reason to be on the bench again........what price for shot nowadays??? anyone bought any lately??

well, better check the local sources here to see where it's at.....only have less then 50# left.......no more cloth bags either it seems.......I have been shooting reclaimed shot for my cowboy gig....all we have to do is hit a steel plate at too close a distance so it works real fine for that.
