you are out, literally in the middle of nowhere. it's a decent spring day, but it does get cold at nights and who knows, there might be a spring blizzard. it's not like you actually watch the weather channel when you can see all of those plasztic breasts on the SPIKE channel.  you only thought you were going for a short drive, but you took a few backroads and after your old pickup threw a rod and died on some little two-rut trail, you gave up trying to start it saw a nice, big grove of trees to walk in and look for sheds and a nice, dry canyon to wander around in now you haven't much of a clue where you are and as far as the wife knows, you were only going to wal-mart to pick up some armor-allfor your camaro and a pack of "feminine necessities" for her. your cell phone is sitting in the garage where you left it after telling your buddy that you would see him at the bar tonight, and besides, it wouldn't get any reception out here anyway. all you do have is yourself, a leatherman and the beer you are holding. there is some rope, more beer and a pistol back in the truck IF you can find your way to it. you know that the sun rises in the east and sets in the west, and that the two stars on the end of the big dipper point north, but you can't count on a clear sky.

other than shout for joy at the fact that you didn't have to get those damned pads after all, what do you do? what's your FIRST concern?

If the truck got you in you merely follow the tire tracks back out...first thing in the morning.  Been there done that.  The truck is a great shelter...why walk around looking for more.  Navigating by the stars and sun is crude at very best; long distance with the sun is a sure way to find how beautiful the outdoors are for a week or two.

How fat are you?  You will be thinned the next time you drink a beer.  You can go week(s) without food. Water maybe 3-5 days depending on temperature.  Stay warm.

you can't entirely count on finding the truck, but as you said, if you can, things will go a little easier. of course, if it rains hard, you might not find too much in the way of tracks.......

I'm sure the proper response is to finish the beer, rip off all your clothes, and go running and screaming through the woods, until you REALLY get your self into trouble. Yuppies do it all the time.

Pistol and Gerber Multitool are always on my belt, so i have them with me. I'm not going to wander away from my truck, I look for references/landmarks as I move. My truck has two tarps, a wool blanket, a couple of mylar blankets, rope, water, some food, etc. Don't have those trackless wastes around here, but do have stream beds that flood. If you are on the wrong side, you are going to be there until the water goes down. Having those things with me make the wait a lot more comfortable.

So, how far back can you be. The forest service has most of the really good trails blocked, ditched, or "rehabilitated". This mean you have a really long walk back on main Forest Service roads to a house which is now occupied by a very unpleasant female with a case of the monthlies. Enjoy your unplanned camping trip. In the Jeep (aka, the "beater truck") we keep an emergency kit in a medium sized duffle. So water, some non perishable food, blanket etc. is all there. The only question is, Do I walk out or let someone find me? I think I'd walk out the next day since nobody knows where to look for you outside of a hospital or jail. Now, tell me again why you have to be the one buying feminine items? There is no surprise here, it happens every month. Here's the deal. I don't buy them. Period. (no pun intended)  The reason why they want you to buy these items for them is this. They don't want to be "embarassed". Of course they don't care if it bothers you though. Just another power play by the women. And no, I don't play the "toilet seat game" either.

Find a nice flat spot, sit down pull out my pocket survival kit and start playing a game of solitar, when someone showed up to point out the moves I had missed, tell him how smart he is, how much I appreciate the help then say "By the way how bout a lift into town".

I tried that Snuffy but someone borrowed my cards and lost a couple of Kings and a deuce so just by luck i had a Little Mermaid coloring book and crayons with me and i finally got rescued when the little girls father went looking for the guy who took her things. I got flown out first class in an air ambulance.
