I am going to buy a 15" barrel for T/C Encore and want to get some opinions on the 243 WSSM.  My plan is to use it for 100 - 300 yd paper target work, no hunting.  I want to get as much as I can from the cartridge and think the WSSM lends itself to efficient performance in a short barrel.

I was originally going to go with the 6mmBR, but the WSSM seems to have more legs at longer range.  Any thoughts?

dfletcher;

I'd suggest reading Hornady 6th edition & see what it has to say about the .243 WSSM.  Specifically, they noted very rapid throat erosion.

Now, with that being said, there has been discussion here about the .243WSSM and that problem.  A search should bring it up.  Strong dissention was raised with Hornady's statements.  Quite frankly I don't remember the entire argument mostly because I have no interest in aquiring a .243WSSM.

But, I tend to believe Hornady wouldn't put that in front of Winchester's lawyers without being able to back it up.  How cheap can you get T/C barrels?

well... this can get sticky in a hurry.

lawdog, recently departed, was a staunch supporter of the super shorts, and really took objection to hornady's claim of erosion. there's the gist of the argument cb alluded to.

for my money, the super shorts can stay on the shelf. for your listed purposes, i think the ppc's and br's are your best bets. specifically, i'd look into the 22's first, and 6's second.

Hunting is not a matter of life or death; it is much more important than that.

Good point - didn't think about throat erosion.  The barrels are about $350.00 each.

I already have some 22cals - 223 Rem & 225 Winchester - and the other end, 308, 375 & 45/70.  6mm is my middle of the road accuracy choice.  The 6BR looking better & better.

there's also a 7 br that might worth consideration. don't really need the bc's for 300 and in shooting, but is an option...
