Topic: largest caliber for fur hunting? Posted: 14 June 2003 at 07:15
if you are hunting fur, what is the LARGEST caliber you would want to use in order to keep pelt damage to a minimum yet still provide a clean one-shot kill??
7mm? 6.5mm? 6mm? .224? .17?

Having taken between 1500-2000 Coyotes in my lifetime for the Fur Market, I can tell you that for Called Coyotes, the .14 and .17 Cals are my preferred Calibers. And most of my hunting is Calling! However for nitehunting where distances can be much greater i prefer the hot .224's with bullet weights in the 55gr-65gr weights, there is most certainly a Trade Off with regard to pelt damage and it is a choice that only the individual himself can make depending on the amount of Time he is willing to dedicate too repairing damaged Fur! For me its just business, Damaged or Un-Prime Fur will not bring me Top Dollar for my goods, I hunt Predators Full Time from Nov-Feb, and I have had to find for myself a balance which works for me. Ron! Real glad to see you up and running again.

My .14 Cal is based on the 221fireball case necked down to .14 cal. it is called the .14-221 Walker. the Bullets are .144" in dia and i mostly shoot the 13gr-15gr bullet weights. Actually there are .10 cal rifles being made also. At a 7.2gr bullet weight.

Russ Lucas out of Kalispell MT makes .14 cal jacketed bullets. his web site is small caliber bullets .com. he makes some 15gr little boatails that shoot perty darn good in my .14-221 Walker, also Bill Eichelberger makes 10 cal up to .14 cal projectiles they shoot real well, the 13gr flatbase is a very good bullet in my 8.5" twist .14 cal Lawrence Barrel. Lawrence rifle barrels is out of Polson MT. He makes 10 cal on up cut rifled barrels, they are EXcellent and Jeff Lawrence is a great guy to do business with as well!

The .17HMR is an accurate little son of a B and is just about perfect for Fox, but is quite a bit light for Coyote. You will need to pay close attention to wind direction and movement when calling, pull the coyotes in as close as you can,say under 75 yds, and place your shots well, You will be badly handicapped on the distant shots so concentrate your efforts on your movement, wind direction, camo and bullet placement, pull em in tight and hit em square. 75% of the Coyotes i kill are under 100yds. And if it were not for the other 25% I too would be looking real close at the .17HMR. I have killed nearly 50 Coyotes with my .14-221 Walker using 13-15gr bullets, but the speed at which these bullets are traveling at impact is just incredible, causing immense hydrostatic shock on impact, Yes small bullets are deadly, and small bullets at super high velocities are super deadly!
