I know you are supposed to be able to do it when you lube and size in one step, but my first trials resulted in gaschecks that were not rock solid tight. This was in a Lyman lubrisizer. I also have tried doing it in a Lee lube and size die and still didn't get good results either. Anyone got a fool proof way to get a straight, solid crimp? I shudder to think of sticking a gascheck in the barrel.AW

The good news is, you won't stick a check in your barrel. The bad news is, many shanks are undersized. The shank section of the mold can be enlarged, if you know a good machinist or gunsmith, to fit the standard Hornady checks.
Another option, is to go here: Damn, can't cut and paste it. Just follow my tag line, and look for, " Howbouta Gator Check buy Again?"
These are made by a small independant manufacturer, who has a minimum of 50,000 for a total order. We make the minumum easily. You can order mixed sizes. Felix Robbins is running the buy, and is very dependable, plus a national record holder in several benchrest cast bullet disciplines. They work very well, gripping the shank securely. I bought 5000 last time for my .358 Win, and will be getting some for my .30 bores this time around.

So it's the bullet that's likely the culprit? I did hear of a gas check seater made by Lyman. Maybe I'll investigate that further before abandoning the whole gas check idea. I just got the idea that the little 92 .44/40 might shoot better with a gas check bullet @ 1300 FPS or so since the rifling is so shallow and worn. Maybe not. I'd love to find a decent cast load that would do for everything up to deer. That 92 is a great starter rifle for kids due to it's conpactness and light weight, but .44/40 seems to be a fussy cartridge to get everything to come together right.AW
