I have a Ruger 22/45. I don't really care for the polymer grip, and it doesn't feel like a 1911 to me. But it does shoot. I have a Red Dot on mine, and it is easy to keep it on my gong at 100 yards from a rest. I do agree about the training. Sign up for a CCW, or some similar class. I took combat pistol training from an old FBI instructor. He said the biggest problem with trying to teach men to shoot, is that all men THINK they know how to shoot a pistol, so fight against the instruction. He said he can take a woman with no experience, and have her outshooting a man in a weeks time. I saw this happen. When I took the training, I had shot probably a hundred thousand rounds through pistols over the years, and had taken a fair amount of game. After going through the training course, my acuracy and technique was very much improved. I got further training from the local police department instructors. And if I find anyone else who is a real gunslinger, I will listen to what they have to say, also.

I have a little Baretta in .25 caliber. It looks somewhat similar to the one you posted above, except that it has a tip-up barrel. The tip-up barrel is one of my favorite feature of some Baretta pistols, since you can load the chamber and fire that round without using the slide to load the chamber. Edited by Rayfromalaska |

That Beretta U22 Neos is a pretty nifty gun. I might have to attempt
getting one. It will probably get shot down, but it is worth a try
right?

Well, the price for it is just right. If it shoots well, thatīs all that matters. I ended-up buying a S&W .22A-1, which is the regular model. The .22A-S (Sports, I guess) is more expensive and looks a little different. However, my son already has a .22A-1, so I already knew that it shot very well. I paid a little over $200.00 for a new .22A-1, and installed a .22mm Truglo Red-Dot sight. Took it afield a day or two ago, and it was extremely easy to shoot a couple of grouse with it ( I didn't want more than two). The grouse didn't allow me to get close, but they were easy picking at 20 yards or so. The pistol is very accurate, and the sight works great. |

Ray, I want to ask you something that is slightly off topic. I work with a lady, who is in the Navy and, by coincidence, from Alaska. I posed a question to her as to what handgun you locals carry when venturing into the woods. Her answer was exactly what I was thinking, when she said, a .357. I asked her about larger revolvers and she said that some carry them, but that they are quite heavy when carrying other things that one may need. What is your opinion, as mine is a .357 as is hers. Just a little off topic as you can see............................Kingpin

Those that live in the 'North' & carry handguns for 'bear' protection also recommend you file the front site down flush. That way it doesn't hurt as much when.... [edit]... you can guess the rest... Regards, Marcus. Edited by North Logan |

Anyway... back on topic... I've been toying with the idea of getting a target type .22 pistol for 'plinking'... been really considering a Ruger 22/45 since the grip angle patterned after the 1911. I do have a .22 Conversion Unit that I have already dedicated to a 1911 frame that goes to the range with me on nearly every trip. Guess I'd have to say for me it would either be a Ruger 22/45 5 1/2'" or a Mk II 5 1/2" bull barrel. That unless I could find a 'deal' on a S&W Model 41 or an older High Standard .22 target pistol. I do have a little Beretta Model 71 .22 lr that is also a lot of fun to shoot but is not really a 'target' pistol... Regards, Marcus. |

Wing, I've got a High Standard HD Military made in '49. Bought it a few years ago and it's been accurate as all heck. The only problem I have with it is one round in ten seems to jam. I wonder if a newer HS magazine would work in the older gun.

I've got HS Military version with target sights and a bull barrel. bought it new in 1967. Still a great shooter. Gunrunner, I got two clips with mine. I used one clip for years and after 20 years had the same trouble with it stovepiping. I found that a slight pressure on the front edge of the magazine lips (tenderly) making them bend tight fixes it in 2 seconds. Just push it against a soft pine board, it will not even scratch the bluing. That fix seems to have fixed it for the last 18 years. Good luck with yours. BEAR |

Do what I do -- visit your local pawn shop and make friends with the owner. Ask him in a postive way, "You charge $10 to handle an out-of-state transfer, right?" Then find the pistol you want on the internet -- www.gunsamerica.com is a good source. I have a Colt Officers Model Target (top-of-the-line target revolver in the 1930s), a Colt Service Ace conversion kit for my M1911s, and a lot of other guns bought used and cheap that way. |

In semi auto I like the older High Standards. I have a Supermatic Tournament with a 7 1/4" & 5.5" bbls and they are wonderful to shoot. If you have basic gunsmithing ability adding barrels is pretty easy. Mitchells is manufacturing their version of the High Standards but I've heard mixed reviews regarding acuracy & reliability For revolver I think it's hard to beat an S & W 17, 6" bbl or Colt Diamondback 6"bbl. The Colt is a bit scarce & barrel heavy, but I like the sight picture with a squared off front sight. |
