What is the minimum side arm you all would feel comfortable carrying in bear country? Caliber & Action |

I carry a 45lc ruger blackhawk. I load 320 grain cast bullets over 18.5 grains of 2400. This isn't a wimp load, and will definately take lesser built revolvers apart.
This is on my hip when hiking or hunting and under my pillow when sleeping, in grizzly country. |

Fella's; Kinda depends on yourself too. If you KNOW you can stand & deliver accurately while facing an animal that's actively interested in killing you, then perhaps something less than mega-ordinance would suit. After all, the gentleman specified minimum. Ammunition would also have a distinct influence IMHO. That being said, the minimum I'd personally carry would be a .357 magnum, the action type not being important. However, my preference runs to .44 mags, .454 Casull's in F.A. guns, and 12 guages. 900F |

My 416 rifle or my 375 pistol are good. But for convience and weight and accesibility. I carry an aluminim frame double action 9mm loaded with 7 rounds of FMJ. Did you hear that the recent grizzly kill in AK; the folks had a 'bear gun' in their tent. My experience is that back packing and fishing, folks only carry the 44 mag heavy weight guns on their first 2 week trip. then it stays in camp. Really helps protect the tent. BEAr |

No kidding bear. I see lots of guys here with huge 44 mags and the like with 7" or longer barrels. They call them bear guns, but most only carry them a few times before dumping them in the tent. My 45 wears a 5.5" barrel, and aluminum gripframe, and ejector housing. It doesn't seem that much heavier than the Taurus tracker it replaced.

Pepper Spray for me. I think the firearm makes a person feel more secure but if the shit hits the fan I'll bet on the pepper spray. I wouldn't bet on anybody using any arm with deadly accuracy in the rush of a genuine bear attack.

You are right Rob. I only carry a handgun for protection AFTER the bear is on me. Hope that never happens. I almost all of the witnessed attacks, in Africa or from big bears. the witness talks about the gun went flying from the hands of the victim. My 9mm is tied with heavy monofiliment into the holster with only 2 foot of line. If I'm going to get bit, he will have 7 FMJs in him. and you can always use the mono line as a tourniquet. If you survive. BEAR |

IF, I carry a sidearm with me, it's a .357 Security Six. Around here, there is more of a problem with the two legged variety of vermin. If I go into an area that has bear (blackies) or cougar I have been taking one of the marlins with me.

Interesting information every one. Bear, I'm especially intrigued by the idea of a monofilament 'leash' for your 9mm. I can understand the thinking though. Anyone own a Ruger GP-100? Shot one several years ago and loved it. Not having much experience with hand guns, what are the biggest difference between shooting a auto vs. revolver? The design differences are obvious. What are your preferences? |

Just some thoughts.
I'm a revolver guy, started shooting a smith k-22 when I was 14, still shooting it. For close shooting in an attack I think the extra rounds in the auto mag count. My 9mm is double action M-39 smith. so it is VERY safe to carry with one up the tube, and the double auto function is very smooth and reliable (only the sigs are better). Again I use a lanyard like the horse soldiers us to (mono) and the M-39 was made for police/military use and has an eye cast into the frame for a lanyard attachment, so it is set for me as from the factory. If you really think you will have to use the gun fast, the single action autos like the 1911 45, MAY have some draw backs. I never liked carrying a weapon cocked, nor having the firing pin sitting on the primer of a loaded case. The closed breeches like the autos and the single shot give a lot more energy that a revolver, for what that is worth. It is really only a personal judgment call. Saw a guy on network TV last night talking about his travels in bear country, a follow up from the earlier attack. He said " I always carry a compass and my 44 magnum handgun. He opened his small day backpack, and pulled our what looked like a single action Super Blackhawk. Nice holster, can you ask the bear to stop his charge while you get the pack of and the straps opened and the gun out and cocked????? BEAR |
