as most of you know, i am on the tightest of tight budgets, but i also like going out and doing a little shooting with my kids. since it isn't much fun passing one .22 around, i am thinking about getting another .22.

the ruger 10/22 is versatile, fun and user-friendly. it also lends itself well to after-market improvement.

i haven't serisouly started looking yet, but one price i remember seeing is 189$ for a new wood/blue 10/22.

a) is this a good price, or are they cheaper if i look around?

b) any other suggestions?

the .22 i have now is a marlin bolt action, and i've been pretty happy with it, but i figure a semi-auto .22 would go well with it and add more versatility to shooting sessions.

that thing that we call "inherent accuracy" is important as well; i don't really know if any one stock .22 is better than another..... any thoughts?

I've got 2 now. I had 5. Never saw a bad one. Never saw one that wouldn't shoot well.

They do have lots of toys for them. I put a fluted target barrel, thumbhole target stock and a 6x24x50 mildot scope on it. 1" groups or less at 100 yds on a calm day.

My son just bought a 17M2 lightweight target barrel and CoreLite stock. Itty bitty clover leafs on a calm day, but hard to hold steady because of the weight.

Try Wal-Mart. They have the best price. Prices of used 10-22's at the gun shows here run more than new at Wal-Mart.

Taz;

A good sale price these days is in the $159.00 - 169.00 range.  I put my 10/22 deluxe on lay-away at Big Bear at $189.00.  The deluxe has a walnut stock, no barrel band & a few other minor differences.

I agree that buying a used one is not worth it.  Used, they are WAY overpriced.   And usually have had the crap beat outta 'em.

Another thing to think about.  If your's doesn't seem to shoot, it's just about as easy as asking to get another barrel to try.  Funny thing is, the stock barrels can be very good.  I don't know why so many people are so anxious to replace them.  In any case, more than half the battle with a Ruger 10/22 barrel replacement isn't the barrel itself, but the proper mounting of the barrel to the action.

Stop thinking about getting one.  Just go get one.   Your kids will love it.   So will you.

I think that the big selling point of the 10-22 is the after market BLING you can hang on it. Mine was sent off for accurizing, SS fluted barrel and thumbhole target stock. My son had over 500.00 in his BEFORE the 17 M2 barrel & stock (300.00).

I paid $215 for my Anniversary edition. If you dont get good performance out of your barrel just send me a line and I will send you my old barrel. My 10/22 has been lightly modified, but is still at the first phase of developement.

It may not be the look most people like, but it suits my needs. Next step is internals, most likely Volquerson (sp?)

The Ruger 10/22 is one of the absolute best all around .22 rifles to ever come down the pike. Out of the box they work pretty good, but I've always found the stock comb to be a bit high for comfortable use with the factory sights. Pretty easy fix. Add a good scope. If glass bedded they shoot VERY well even with the factory barrel. This can even be improved further with a trigger job. A good 10/22 is never a mistake.AW

thanks for the replies so far. looking forward to more!

NH - thanks for the offer. if i am able to follow though with this purchase and i end up needing to take you up on it, i'll sure let you know. by the way, i like the look of that stock!

CB - i went in to BB today, and the standard blue/hardwood were quite reasonable. i think they were like 5 dollars cheaper at walmart, but i would rather support the locals.

AW - no problem for me, i plan on using a scope too!

a couple of questions, guys -

i see that ruger is offering the 10/22 with a 20-inch barrel, versus the normal 18&1/2 inches. is there any advantage at all to this?

this same model also seems to have a stock identical to the deluxe stock (no barrel band), except it is hardwood ratehr than walnut. does anyone know if the walnut stock on the deluxe would fit this 20-inch model?  judging by the pix, i would say yes, but you never know......

No reason why it shouldnt. I haven't seen any of the new versions, but it should fit fine. THey didnt change the internals any, so it should be inletted the same. The stock design looks better than the original. Probably a lot more comfortable.

Taz;

I saw the 10/22 rifle also, in fact went in thinking I was gonna get it.  Then they shoved the deluxe under my nose for only $10.00 more & well, the deal got done.

There shouldn't be any advantage with the longer barrel as far as accuracy goes, particularly if you're planning on using a scope.  Almost all .22 rimfire ammo completely burns the powder in 14 to 16 inches according to Volquartsen.  Using a scope would render any sighting plane arguments void also.  The only place it might be a quantifiable advantage is in noise reduction.  Other than that, it's a looks personal preference kinda thing.

>>>Tell ya what, I'll donate a 4X Bushnell & a set of rings to your cause, stop by the house.<<<

that offer is just a little too good to pass up! i might have to swing by vintage sellers first!

as for the rifles themselves, here's the deluxe:

Caliber:.22 LR
Capacity:10 Rounds
Finish:Blued
Stock / Grip:American Walnut
Barrel Length:18 1/2"
Groove:6
Twist:1:16" RH
Overall Length:37"
Weight:5 3/4 lbs
California Approved:N/A
Massachusetts Approved:N/A
Front Sight(s):Blade
Rear Sight(s):Adjustable
Other Features:Cross Bolt Safety
Suggested Retail Price: $ 324.00
Miscellaneous:Deluxe w/ Sights

and here's the "RR":

Caliber:.22 LR
Capacity:10 Rounds
Finish:Blued
Stock / Grip:Hardwood
Barrel Length:20"
Groove:6
Twist:1:16" RH
Overall Length:38 1/2"
Weight:5 lbs
California Approved:N/A
Massachusetts Approved:N/A
Front Sight(s):Blade
Rear Sight(s):Adjustable
Other Features:Cross Bolt Safety
Suggested Retail Price: $ 275.00
Miscellaneous:10/22 Rifle features adjustable rear sight, rifle-style stock with tapered forend, 20" barrel, no barrel-band, and flat buttpad.

from what i can see, they are identical except for barrel length on the "RR" and the walnut stock on the deluxe. in a perfect world, i would really love to see the deluxe stock on the "RR," but it looks like that isn't an option.

based on CB's comments re: the "importance" of that extra inch-and-a-half, the deluxe looks good to me. i don't know what the deal is with the MSRPs, but the "local" prices don't seem to come even close to being that high.

Ron, do you think in the future you might put a heavy barrel on the 10/22?  If so, a new stock will be needed, as a hb won't fit the factory stock.  Midway and others often have barrel/stock combos on sale.

If you plan on leaving it factory I'd go with the Deluxe model.  It looks good and is plenty accurate for squirrel and rabbit hunting.

Fella's;

One other, possibly minor, difference between the two is that the deluxe comes with sling swivels.  However, I'm not sure if the swivels would be the common 1" or the 'deluxe' 1.25"  type.  I've made it just a standard thing to go with 1.25" slings all the time if possible.

Looking at it economically though, thats about a $25.00 difference if you had to buy the swivels & have someone install them for you.  Maybe more depending upon your relationship with the smith.

The 96/22 is ok. I prefer the 10/22 though.

well, so much for buying local. i went to the place where CB put his on lawaway in order to put a deluxe on layaway, and they will not honor the same price for me (189$). they want about 240$ for it, and on top of that, want 50% down before they will even order it, which brings this way out of my budget for the moment. they did have an RR model for 199$ (20$ more than it should have been, according to reports), but by then i was rather frustrated, so i said the hell with it and left.

at walmart, i can orthe dexluxe for 205$, which is more than i was prepared to pay, but quite a bit less than at the other place. since i've got to be frugal, not just as a matter of principle, but also as a matter of not having any damn money, i will probably go with that purchase and pay the 205$.

i've got one more place to check (scheels) on the price, but if they can't beat walmart, then i'll probably stay with walmart. this ticks me off, because all things being equal, or even close to equal, i would prefer every time to buy local, but the difference between the local guy and walmart is almost a week's worth of gas........

GUNRUNNER - i ahve no plans to put the heavy barrel on qat the moment, but one thing i do like about the 10/22 is that it seems that you can add, subtract and change your mind or try something new any time you want.....

UPDATE

i just got off the phone with steve at scheels, and he said that he would be happy to match the price of 189$. i will also be able to put it on layaway rather than fork up half the cost up-front. scheels is not quite local, but they are definitely more local than wal-mart.

he didn't have any in-stock, but put an order out monday and will give me a call when they come in so that i can go down and pick one out. with any luck, i'll have a few to choose from so that i can pick one with nice-looking wood.

i guess it's going to be a happy ending all-around!
