One of my employees brought a rifle by for me to look at the other day, to see if it was worth the trouble and money to fix up. It was an Ithaca tilting block .22 single shot, that had seen way better days. Broken hammer spur, rusty barrel, cracked butt and missing butt plate. Clearly it had been rode hard and put up wet. I explained that as ashooter it wasn't worth the money, but as a rifle that his father had had, it might have enough sentimental value to fix.
Another co-worker came by, and glanced in the case. He asked what the rifle was, and I told him it was an Ithaca single shot, made to sell cheaply, and in fact it was made before 1968, because it had no serial number.
He said "Wow, a pre "64!" Those are worth a lot of money, aren't they?"
I guess I looked at him like he had broccoli growing out of his ears or something, because he asked me what was wrong.
I tried to explain to him that "Pre'64" refered to Winchester's production changes in 1964, in order to produce rifles at a more competitive price, but I don't think he believed me. I've also heard people refer to "pre '64" Remingtons as well!
Anyone else hear people use the term like that?

LOL, all the time TG. I have had loonies tell me that their pistol was valuable because it was made in 1893, is old and is very,very valuable, while pointing at the patent date on the barrel. I show them proof that it was made well into the 20th century, sold for not more than $15 any time it was sold. I also tell them that there is no longer any ammo produced for it, and is valuable only to him, where upon he produces an old cardboard box with green, moldy ammo in it and says "Here's ammo!" with great pleasure. The box, like his gun, is rotting apart. He asks what the gun is worth WITH the ammo, and I generously pull a price out of my ass like $75. He then asks me if I want to buy it, and I tactfully decline because I don't have a place to store such a beautiful antique. Then, I could also tell hundreds of stories about "Pre '64 Remingtons" too. It just sems that these guys aren't out to gouge anyone, they honestly don't know ANYTHING about guns...............................Kingpin

Pre-64 huh?  Wasn't that when Schwinn still made good bicycles?    I was to young to be dating hot Italian chicks then.  But old enough to be thinkin' about them.

What I've usually heard is like Kingpin mentioned.  Someone sees the patent date and thinks that's when the gun was made.

Somebody better call the Secret Service. Let 'em know there's an illegal alien in the White House...and it ain't the cook!!

Trigger;

Yup, you hang around this subject of guns long enough & you'll find out that the levels of ignorance out there are literally jaw-dropping.

I try to keep in mind that once upon a time I didn't know much about the subject either.  But sometimes it is very hard not to snicker.

Sounds like the guy who proudly walks around the gunshow with rifle held high and speaking loud praises of it trying to make everyone envious of their possession.  I'm sure you know the type.
