Hey,

When I asked a gal if her hoss was a quarter horse she said, NOoOOOO mines a tTbread.  Got to thinkin, cain't a Qhorse be a Tbread?  What's the difference - that T meant it had a clean blood line.  Does that mean a qhorse is a mut?

Thoroughbred is a breed like Quarterhorse, Morgan, or Arabian. However there is some Arabian in Thoroughbreds and there is some cross over between T bred and Quarterhorses too. To do the crossover the breeding stock has to be accepted by the breeding association as an allowable stud or mare in their registry. To get in they have have a certain build or other quality that the breed people find desirable.

There's a lot more to it that I don't have a clue about. There is also the Appenedix Registry. I don't know if all breeds have one but the AQHA does. Most running (racing) quarterhorses are appendix quarterhorses which means they are part T-bred. My yearling is one of those.
