All to often when I'm out in some brushy area I'll end up with a tick on me. Sometimes I find them before they bite into me, but once in a while I don't know I've got one till it's to late. I hate pulling those little blood suckers off. Does anyone have a method for keeping ticks off you, period? |

i know some people tie off the cuffs of their pants, that seems to help. also, a lot of OFF-type products claim to repel ticks, but i ahve never really had a problem with them, so i don't know if the stuff works.

We used to have problems with ticks but started using permethylin(sp). Anywho, it's the same stuff in advantage they give to your dog, it's for clothes only and kill them buggers dead. Ever since I've been using that stuff I've only got one tick. Spot |

Nope, not even close, Spot. Permethrin is a fairly early synthetic
pyrethroid, while the active ingrediant in Advantage is Imidacloprid,
an entirely different chemical family.
All the pyrethrins (plant derivatives) and pyrethroids (man made copies of pyrethrins) are repellant as hell to insects. They also knock down insects very quickly, with a fairly quick kill. Imidacloprid, and all related compounds, have no repellancy, minimal knock down and a fairly slow kill. Permethrin makes a tolerable mosquito and tick repellant, but use it only as labeled. Don't get an Ag version, or one labeled fror structural pest control. Buy a specific labeled repellant with Permethrin listed as the active ingrediant. Edited by Triggerguard |

Ticks suck. Where I hunt I've got lots of ticks. I duct tape my pants, but that doesn't really stop them. I've had them in my eyebrows, hair and back of neck. I hunt with my brothers and we do a tick check before getting in the car. Like a bunch of monkeys picking at each other. Permethrin is the only stuff I've found that works...great. I buy Sawyers brand in spray cans. It Last close to a month on your clothes. I refresh it every week the night before I go hunting. Ticks respond to CO2. My brother an I placed on on the kitchen table and slowly walked around the table. It could follow our CO2 trail. Unbelievable. Ticks usually are in low hanging trees and fall/jump when a mammals CO2 is detected. I hunt turkey in a very heavily infested are in spring time. I can actually see then fall on me. i have picked them off and set them down on the ground. They run up the bark of the tree pretty fast, little scramblers. It is so bad that before the season, I've bought gallons of Permethrin, and sprayed the area about 50 foot around where my blinds will be placed the following weeks. It is a royal pain in the ass, but it works. There are lots of good tick internet sits, and everyone should know how to avoid them and id them. Especially with Lymne's disease being so common. BEAR

I live in N.S. and we have tics also, from May until middle of Aug.I have tried everything off the shelf and one day a buddy and I were going fishing,I got out of the truck and the blackflies started to hit. So,I taped my pants legs and cuffs and looked behind the seat for something to spray on,I found my trusty can of (WD 40) for rusted bolts etc.I started spraying my cloths even put some on hands and a bit on face and neck.We went down threough this meadow and started fishing. The flies didn't land on me,and my buddy was beating them like he was on fire. When we got to the truck he picked off 75 ticks and I only had 2 on the back of my jacket. He used it everytime after that and found it worked for himself. The other off the shelf stuff seems to help a bit but not like the WD 40.Has anyone tried it and what was their results? |

WD-40 hummmmm. that stuff is petroleum based, don't know if I'd want it on flesh for prolonged periods like hunting or fishing. And it smells strong so hunting might as well smoke a good Cuban cigar in the woods. But at my age the WD-40 might make the joints work a little smoother ! BEAR |

I'll try out that WD 40 stuff. It isn't much good for anything else I've ever seen. Sure as hell would never put it on a gun. We were getting our range ready for our upcoming spring shoot yesterday, and I got a batch of ticks. Must have just hit an infested area, as I had never got ticks on this area before. They seem to be very area specific around here.

The real solution to the tick problem is the "four poster." This was developed under the Department of Agriculture Tick Eradication Program. It's based on the fact that about 95% of ticks spend some part of their lives on white tail deer, and about 95% of the ticks on a deer are on the head and neck. The Four Poster is a deer feeder shaped like an inverted T. The stem of the T is filled with corn which flows to two feeding stations on each arm. A paint roller is placed on each corner of the feeder (hence the name, "Four Poster") and filled with cattle dip. As the deer feed, they rub their heads and necks against the paint rollers. The government, having developed this device with public money, proceeded to patent it so the public can't use it. They gave the patent to the American Lyme Disease Foundation -- which may be a good foundation, but have no manufacturing and distribution capability. Then the EPA joined in, saying they had not approved any cattle dip for this use, and "what if a deer hunter found one in the woods and didn't know what it was?" If you want relief from ticks, have your congressman or senator go straighten this out. |
