Well... I just can't seem to get this dang 60 horse fixed.  What's really scarry is the mechanic has no idea what to check now either... he even said so.  He called up Mercury and they don't even know what to do.  Mercury's last suggestion is to check the upper seal (by pulling the flywheel - $$$) and the lower seal (by pulling the power head $$$$$$$$$$$$$$).  Well I'm sure that I am a sucker, but I spoke to the dealer and he and I worked something out that will fix the motor.  He has a brand new 2004/5 Mercury 75 horse that has been sitting in his shop since March.  He needs to get rid of it and I'm the sucker that is taking it.  He's giving me almost all of the money I've put in the 60.  I feel like it is a good a fair deal for both of us.

So anyway, that is how you fix a 1989, 60 horsepower Mercury... you replace it with a brand new 75 horsepower motor.

Y'all shoot straight!!!

Moose,

that is a solution...not all bad.

I took the alternative (cheap bastard) I fix the 1989 Merc I/O myself.  They are really not bad to work on.  IF YOU ARE A good shade tree mechanic.

Ask my kid and he will say that "he would rather have dad pay the bucks so the boat GOES and the family can use it".  If you don't have the time to fix them, you end-up with grease under your nails every week end till you get it fixed.  Dealers seldom can fix any boat motor.  They just keep changing parts in the hope it gets fixed $$$$$$$$$$$$$.

You did the right thing if you like boating.

Hey BEAR... that 60 is sitting on a stand at the shop if you want it.  If you offer $500 for it I know they'd take it.  Then you'd have one to work on and put on a boat later... or give it to BEAR CUB and let him put it on a boat.

I also ment to say that they already have the new motor hangin' on the boat.  It's friggin' HUGE!!!!  It looks like a 150 on the back of a jon boat.  When I pulled up they were grinnin from ear to ear.  They were flippin' coins to see who lake tests it.  They were excited and scared at the same time.  The speedometer only goes to 45 mph.  They said they've never pegged out a speedometer before.  I told them that there wasn't a peg on the dial so it could wrap around to 10 mph .  I'm kinda scared.  The prop chart calls for a 15" pitch... but that won't be enough.  It'll need 18" or 19" at least.  I'll keep y'all posted.

Well, sure enough, that 15" prop only pushed the boat around 39 mph, and 5800 rpm.  It's supposed to run at 5200 rpm, so they have ordered another prop.  We'll see what happens next week.

moose,

Over reving is the quick destroyer of 2 cycle engines (loss of oil is fast death too).

Remember that at high speed on an AL johnboat a small branch acts like a can-opener.

Good luck...catch some fish.

PS You probably know that most folks in the south call Mercury outboards "welfare motors".
