Well, the search continues for that one bullet that is gonna give me the consistency, accuracy and on-game performance I'm looking for in the 7mm RUM for LR varminting. Hoping to take advantage of their high BC, the 162 gr. Hornady A-Max's proved useless. Just finished up a morning of testing out the 175 gr. Sierra GK's. Thought the .533 BC and added weight would give some advantages ballistically. High hopes quickly dashed. Was getting some wonderful velocities and small extreme spreads using Retumbo but from the get-go, the accuracy was horrific. Thought it might be the virgin brass but even with the 9 once fireds, having neck and bullet run-out both under .002" on each cartridge, it was a no go. Around 2 1/4" at 100 was the tightest it wanted to go for 3 shots. Not acceptable. Figure it's the 1:9 1/2" twist of the barrel that just isn't right for these long bullets. Next up, the 160 gr. Nosler AccuBonds. Will start with them tomorrow AM. From field testing, it seems as though Nosler is being a little generous with their advertised BC's of their bullets so I'm sceptical of the advertised .531 BC from the get go.. Not a big thing, for typical, closer range big game hunting purposes (and still puts them higher than other conventional brands), but wooooooooe nelly, you can sure see the incorrectness of it all when comparing actual bullet drop to what the drop chart reads using incorrect data. Good to go into load development knowing this though. I'll just have to confirm actual BC's. Will worry about this IF I can get some sort of accuracy out of them. Hopefully. If they don't work might try the 168 gr. MK. Then the 150 gr. BT. And if all else fails, I'll come full circle back to the 140 gr. BST's. I'm sure I'd enjoy working with them much more with their actual BC. Should confirm this information anyway, I suppose. We'll see. By the way, it was a great day for early LR varminting this morning. Had the three C's. Cool, Cloudy and Calm (at least, as calm as MT gets). I had nothing prepared to shoot, but as spotter, was able to confirm a 1066 yd. rockchuck kill for my hunting partner. He was using his 6mm-284 and a 107 gr. MK. I was exstatic for him. The 500 and 1000 yd. club in one summer. I better get my tail in gear if I have any hopes of doing the same. Later. >> klallen |

Hi Klallen,I wonder if a Berger projectile might suit that fast twist barrel.I have also wondered if you might not try H1000 over retumbo. Most shooters using the RUM down here are using AR2217 which is marketed in the US as H1000. That was one hell of a good shot for 1066y.Those 6-284 sure do scream along. I have just rolled a batch of competition loads and will head off for a 300 yard comp after lunch.Been windy and we had a little snow so conditions could be nasty later. Best of luck on working up the load.Have a good one macca. |

Hi MACCA >> I certainly have considered Berger. Matter of fact, they've been considered to the point of writing an e-mail to Berger with questions about their 168 and 180 gr. VLD and their ability to stand a 1 in 9 1/2" twist of my RUM. I had already pretty much counted out the 180 (LOVE THAT BC) and that was confirmed by a nice Berger Service Rep. named Walt. The 168 would work. At least he claimed they would. Not a shabby BC in its own right. Only reason I'm not currently trying those is results that my shooting partner found with his 6mm-284 and heavy for caliber VLD's. Much like the A-Max's did in my RUM, accuracy proved totally unacceptable, steadily deteriorating with velocity. I couldn't even get over 3000 fps with the A-Max's without all loss of accuracy. I fear the same thing with the VLD's and my twist. I agree, they still might ve very well worth a try. I'm slowly testing everything that I can get my hands on so I'd imagine the 168 VLD's will have their turn eventually. Snow, huh? I tell ya, MACCA. I'd give my left lung for some snow (and the temps that go with it) right about now. MT and many areas of the US have been in a bit of an oven bake for the last little while. Several days strung together of 100+. Not good at all. I much prefer the cold of winter. Enjoy the coolness. I'm counting the days till fall hits. Chat with ya later. >> klallen |

That nice service guy is Walt Berger, He started making benchrest 22 cal bullets about 30 years ago and just recently sold the business to ?, anyway he is there for a while for people to talk to. Call him and pick his brain, he's a wealth of information on bullets. Have you ever met any of the 1000 yard club members in MT? Here's a link to their club and some names of the guys that shoot form MT http://www.edgewa.com/benchrest/ Hell you never know even you might learn something from them, LOL.

I'll be darned, DFC. Had to look back at the e-mail, as I remembered there was indeed a last name initial given, and low and behold Walt "B" it was. Very cool. Guess I got the info. straight from the horses mouth, so to speak, huh? I would love to see his 168 gr. VLD work in the RUM. BC's in the mid .6's certainly wouldn't hurt my feelings. I'm just skeptical of them holding together. I will test them sooner rather than later, though. Never met any of those fellos from the club. I've no doubt any one of them would be a wealth of knowledge for me to learn from. By the way, thanks for the answer the other day. Later. >> klallen Edited by klallen |
