Its only a week and four days until i am off hunting!!!! WOooO!!!!! I cant wait!!!! I need to do an inventory of my hunting equipment, and i need new boots. My feet grew, so now i have the largest feet in the family. Guess i will have to do some gearing up this weekend. Need to also sight in the weapons, and get the reloads made for the #3. I am shaking i am so excited!! Then, 4 days after i get back from this hunting trip, i go on another one to northern NH for some bird hunting!!! I just cant wait!!!! Hmmm. What guns to bring for the former trip. Hmmm. I am thinking the Ruger blackhawk and m77mk2LR in .30-06 (with partition reloads) and for the thick stuff, the Ruger #3 carbine and the blackhawk should do just dandy. Also, Mr. Ruger is bringing some of the prototype #3's, so there is one with my name on it and that should be interesting! I cant wait!!!

Sounds fun. What is special about the prototyped #3's?

Yes, obviously...lol. But a prototype is usually a new unproven design or idea or something, what is different about them that they are a prototype??

BKC;

Might this be the prototype of the never-spoken-of SUPER-SWAGER, .45/70?  You know, the one that has the 'choked' barrel that uses the ammo's own powder to swage the bullet down to .25 caliber!!  It super-improves the sectional density and the ballistic coeffient without having to obey those pesky rules of the Greener formula.

Of course, the powder charge has had to be upped just a touch in order to take advantage of the improved B/C.  But that's not a factor as the old Newtonian physics thing comes into effect.  The swaging tends to 'pull' the gun forward, thereby offsetting the increased recoil from the 'slightly' more powerful propellant charge.

As the rumor mill has it, the process itself works.  The drawback has been the 142 lb. barreled action.  So, one has to presume that exotic materials or processes have had to be initiated in order to produce a 'field gun'.

How is it ya spell guniea pig correctly anyhow?

Ok, they are going to make new production #3's, that are built a little bit differently then the old ones. They hopefully wont have the same God aweful stock of the old ones (namely OWWIE with .45-70), and the reciever is using a new color case hardening that ruger hasnt used in the past. I cant wait to see and hunt with this beastie. Hopefully i will bloody my '06, with my handloads. Now wouldnt that be something? The first big game kill i make with an un-bloodied rifle with handloads? I like my odds . I am doing an inventory of hunting gear this weekend, so i should be good to go by next!

Sounds like you're rarrin' to get out there NH.  If your getting new boots better wear em a lot before the hunt to get em comfy.  I hope you bag your first big game with your '06.  It felt good to me to use my own load in my rifle.  Have fun.     And good luck.
