Topic: Muzzleloading for Big Game Posted: 13 June 2003 at 02:46 |
Hey guys, how many of you have taken big game with a frontstuffer, what kind of game was it, what rifle were you using and what load were you using. I have yet to get my muzzleloader, but i will send for it in a couple of weeks as soon as i get the money.

A Bedford County .45 cal flintlock accounted for my first two deer ever back in the early seventies. I've since taken deer and elk with both my 20 bore trade gun, and .54 cal. Alexander Henry English Sporting rifle. Round ball only. The more you learn, the less you will be tempted to use other projectiles.

I used to hunt exclusive with a .50. I now have a .54 that don't see much use cause there ain't a special season like in some places I've lived. Really helps hone the skills. I think every new hunter should have to hunt with a bow or PRIMITIVE muzzleloader for 5 years before using a HP rifle.

I have hunted with the .44 mag and .30-30 the past three years. This year i am going to try and include a frontstuffer, a bpcr, a new shotgun, and a bow. I will have to work my ass off to get all of these hunting implements, but i will try. Actually the order is more like this: Muzzleloader, shotgun, bow, and bpcr. The shotgun will be a Browning BPS in 20 guage, with either 26 or 28 inch barrel. The bow will be the Reflex Gamegetter in left handed form, and the bpcr will most likely be a replica Winchester model 1892 or maybe a Ruger #3 in .45-70, loaded with 55 gr. bp and with a cast bullet.

Taken a few whitetails with muzzleloaders and in .50 and .54. Roundball works, I don't need bullets or such in a roundball gun.
Want to take something with my 20 bore fowler, haven't shot anything but small game with it.
I often hunt with older/oddball cartridges and rifles. Have taken whitetail with .577/450 Martini Henry, .45/70 in a Trapdoor carbine,
and .38/40 WCF in an 1892 Winchester. All loads were cast bullets and BP.

Well Triggerguard, it seems like, from what i have read, you are a primitive type hunter. Do you hunt with a bow too?

I bowhunt some, but I'm not real succesful! I can get within 40 yards of just about any whitetail, but that last 10 to 20 yards is a killer for me.

I've taken about a dozen whitetails with a front stuffer, most with a T/C hawken in 50 cal. and a roundball. A couple of years ago I got a wild hair and bought me one of them new fangled in-line T/C's also in 50 cal. shot 2 deer with it using a saboted 44 cal jacketed bullet. Much prefer the Hawken with a round ball. My son used the in-line last fall to take his first deer, he really likes it, maybe I'll give it to him.
Muleskinner, I guess I qualify, I hunted deer with a bow for 7 years and with a muzzleloader for three years before I started hunting them with a high power too.

I've take'n, moose, elk, caribou, black bears, whitetails, muley's, antelopes, coyotes, and grouse,.... with "roundball muzzleloaders" for tha last 20+ years.
I find modern HP rifleguns to be extremely "BOREING"!!!!
Very best regards!!
