AW,  I've bought the Rem Sub Sonics by the case.  When I had my own hunting grounds they were the best by far for taking care of ground squirrels and rabbits.  Nice and quiet.  Very accurate.  And actually plenty of punch out to 75 yards on small rabbits.  Bullets went right through the chest.  Used a 10/22 with heavy barrel/scope or a 77/22 varmint/target rifle with scope.  (With the right setup they are very quiet.)   I did have one bad lot where one or two out of ten would be supersonic, but for the most part they've been very good.  I've tried some of the other expensive brands of sub-sonic but they didn't shoot worth a damn.  I think the Remingtons are the best.

Haven't come across them down here AW.Used to be a big market for sun sonics when every second bloke had a suppressor on his 22.That's gone now and only a few places stock the sub sonics.

I like them for rabbits close in around the house. Also they are good for Starlings nesting in our hay sheds.

I've never used them???  Would they work on larger game than squirrels, rabbits, and birds????   I'm thinking about ground hogs which are a nuisance around here.  Presently I'm using a 22 mag with hollow points (devastating) but a little LOUD.

Any thoughts, shots are usually under 50 yds.  I like the mag cause I don't want to wound a critter that then crawls under a porch or garage and dies (smell!!!)

I've used the Eley sub's and I see now that the Remington boxes say Eley on them so I assume they must be almost the same. I think they'd take a ground hog with a head shot. They are very accurate and kinda pricey for a .22 almost as much as a box of mags. But they are quiet. Not as quite as a CB but they have alot more punch.

Endeavor to persevere.

I'm not sure about that Bear.  I've never had experience with ground hogs.  From pictures I've seen they look pretty big and tough, as compared to a rabbit or squirrel.   I was surprised at how far out the sub sonics would be effective, but again that was on thin skinned rabbits.

I would think if you can get under 30 yards and get a clean head shot it would work.  Maybe try it and see, but have your 22 magnum at the ready just in case it's needed.  Hey, there's an opportunity for you and your brothers to get together for some experimenting.

Ground hogs are particularly difficult to kill.  Especially with a single shot.  I've killed lots with a 22 short out of a pistol, but I've had a few that appeared to be head shot run, crawl down the hole.  Actually, on a pound to pound comparison, squirrels are very difficult to kill.  I've hit them with 22lr in the head when they were high in oak trees only to have them die with their claws tight on the the branch.  When this happens some guys will try to shoot them down, and I've tried that.  It just wastes meat and can take 5 or more shots.  I find it I mark the tree in my mind and revisit it in an hour of two the tree rat will have fallen.  Hopefully belly up so it is easy to find in a pile of fallen leaves.

My theory to date in using the 22 mag with hollow points is that they are "DEAD" period.  It is not uncommon for me to shoot a big one that is 10#+.

I'll get some of the sub long rifles ( I assume that is what they are) and give it a try

They would be pretty minimal for groundhogs, but a good hit is a good hit. I think of them more as a rabbit and squirrel load myself. Of course it's amazing how deadly a lowly .22 can be and equally amazing how tough some small animals can be sometimes when hit well with a .22.AW

These look good.  I'll have to get me some.  I'll probably stick to the 22 mag for the nuisance hogs, but I'm sure something will need a subsonic.

The Aguila[eagle] brand of .22 rf from Mexico has a 60gr subsonic load, looks like a short, but is as long as a lr.

Some people have a hard time getting results with them, a friend has 5 .22's and none shoot to 6" at 25yd, he just got a 1in9 twist barrel for his 10-22 and it does well.

I tried them, my Win.67 ss puts them in a group that can be covered with a quarter at 50 yds, just 3" right and 1" low from regular 40gr hs poi, a Mossberg managed 3" at 25 yd, but of 10 shots, 7 did not cycle and clear the action, a Ruger MkII did 2" at 25yd and all 10 functioned , no problem .Seems to be alot of difference among various brands of rifles and pistols.

The 60 gr lead slug hits with a real whump, I have confidence it will take squirrel and rabbit at 50-70 yds and knock them flat, with a decent hit, of course.

Don

I may have to try that 60 grain Aguila load. Sounds like it has real potential IF your rifle will group it properly. How pricey are they?AW

I got my son (9) his first real gun for Christmas this year.  A single shot Rossi youth with the .22 and 20 gauge barrels.  I picked up some regular .22's and some Remington subs.  I was dissappointed in the 'sound' of the subs they were not noticeably quieter than the .22 lr we were shooting.

Could it be the gun?

After reading Mr. Mom's post "adobe: ive always use cci cb caps.. used out of a bolt or lever all you hear is the hammer fall."
I was hoping for something much quieter.

Any thoughts???

teebogr81,   The subs will still make noise, but not as loud as high velocity 22 ammo.  Out of my Rugers 24" barrel they seem pretty quiet.   In my pistols they don't seem as loud as hv stuff.   But I have had some boxes where too many rounds went supersonic and were loud.

It's really not the "bang", from firing, that's being eliminated with the subsonics.  It's the "crack" from the bullet flying supersonic over a distance.   The subsonics have always seemed pretty quiet to my ears.

I bet your son is wearin' a big grin with his new Rossi.  Hope it shoots good for him.        GR

Thanks runner....

Sure wish they were quieter.  But oh well.....

Yep, my son is very happy with his new gun.  I liked the options it offers as well.  As he gets older I can pick up one of three or four centerfire barrels for it all the way up to .308!!  I can hardly imagine how hard that would kick.....But a .243 is probably in his future to shoot some deer and yotes with dad in a few years.

If you want quiet, try the Remington CB load. I'm sure there are still some on the shelves even though they discontinued them. I really like this load; it effectively turns a .22 into a pellet gun as far as noise is concerned. At short range it kills squirrels ok. It lacks a bit on hard headed coons in traps though. I suppose the CCI version would be worth a try if you can't find the Remington load. I need to get some more of these urban pest control loads.AW

Adobe;
Sorry I missed your question about the Aguila .22's
They are about $ 2.75-3.00 a box, but that is not much different than some of the others.
The problem is finding them, no shop around here carries them, have to stock up when a gun show happens.
