After Waring out my Marlin I need a new pump shot gun. I'm looking at the 1300 winchester or the 870 Remington. I like the 1300 the best but it looks like it doesn't come in the 3 1/2' mag and the Remington does, whats up with that? Any one know if the 1300 is available in 3 1/2? and can I get a catalog from Remington?

D4570,

What do you need a 3 1/2 mag for?  Duck?  Turkey?

If you not doing one of those you don't need it, heck even if your duck or turkey hunting if your shooting heavy shot you don't need the 3 1/2".

Heavy shot performs better than lead!  The reason they needed the extra 1/2 was for steel shot which is bigger for the lead equivalent.  Now heavy shot is really, really making long shots possible.

BTW - yer right, I looked at win's web page and no 1300's have 3 1/2" chambers.

4570,

I would suggest the Remington. The 1300 is a good shotgun but the 870 is better. Look at the bolt on the 1300 when you close it. it turns to lock. In my opinion this would be a place that a little dirt would cause some problem. The 870 is a proven design that would be hard to beat.

Just my opinion.

Thanks I ordered catalogs from both, word of mouth is the best.I use my shot gun for every thing , I probably wont use the 3 1/2" shells for much but ' I would like the option if the need ever arises. Thanks I looks like the Reminton is coming out on top!

870 all the way.  I've got one for trap, one for rabbits (20 ga) and one for ducks 3" with polychoke.  In addition I have a couple just because they are so dam great.  One I got new in 1960, never had a failure and never needed a part replaced.

I got my son a 1300 win with the changeable stock.  never a problem.  But wingmaster (nice handle) is right, the bolt is a rotary.  In addition there are more and cheaper  barrels for the 870.  Including the rifled barrels.

Spot is also giving you good information.  The 3 1/2 inch is not a good all-round choice.  the action is longer and just adds weight/length.  The 2 3/4 is all anyone really needs, but a 3" is a confidence factor.

I usually shoot 2 3/4 inch 12 guage for ducks.  Young guys usually buy the 3 1/2 inch.  When I was young I bought a 10 guage 3 1/2 mag double for geese.  Now I still have the 10 mag, but usually take the 20 guage 870, and think I do as well with it (maybe better).

Magnumitis has not overlooked the shotgun world.

The 870 is the pump shotgun that all others are judged by. To top it all off, the 870 is also a world class fighting shotgun. I know, and have heard all about certain police departments are all over the cheaper stuff, but, they are hamstrung by locality budgets. Consequently, there are a lot of officers armed with dead mans guns...............Kingpin

Hope is a 16 or 20 bore.

Your love it.  You will need to get some rounds thru the 'sportsman' model to get it smooth.  Might try some 'gunslick' at first.

congratulations, an addition to the gun cabinetTongue

KMart is about the best kept secret about 870's As a dealer, I can't buy them as cheap as they sell them. When you get that 870, there will be NO looking back. I bought a Wingmaster in 1976, brand new, shot thousands upon thousands of rounds through it, and it's still as tight as the day I bought it, all be it a lot slicker with all that use.................Kingpin

I too will suggest the Remington model-870 for 2 reasons OK. #1 is that it does have a very long and extensive track record for being an extremly dependable shotgun.

#2 is the the Remington model-870 is the only gun from the factory that will in fact pattern #4 shot right from the get go. Now this is important if you hunt turkey at longer ranges etc. We have two 870 Turkey GUNS in the Express issue, also with slug barrels.

I have an 870 trap gun I used for years and it never failed once.

However, I would advise you to buy what feels good to your shoulder and in your hands first. I don't think you will ever need that 3.5 inch shotgun for shooting ducks, maybe geese.....most I know still use the 3 inch mags. Most 3.5 inch guns I have seen, don't pattern worth a HOOT!!!

If you must have a goose gun that reaches out and patterns well, I would advise you to get a 10 gauge shotgun right off. You will then have the best of both worlds going after geese only. To much on ducks and they are heavy to carry. A 3.5 inch 12 gauge will be about 65% as effective as a real honest to goodness 10 gauge gun.

I bought a new 870 wingmaster maybe 3 weeks ago now.  It looks great, feels great, heck of a gun.  It does not, however, like the cheap Winchester ammo from wally world.  Not an entirely big deal since Rem makes some ammo almost as inexpensive that works fine.
The prob with the Win stuff is that every few rounds sticks in the chamber.  On the first round I fired, I didn't think I was going to be able to get the shell out of the gun.  It finally came out and only one more out of about 30 rounds stuck that bad.  The others were minor, but still could screw you up on that follow up shot.  So I switched to the Rem game load stuff and it works great every time.
Even with that small issue, I would still highly recommend the 870.
Before I got my Wingmaster, I was using an 870 Express.  Also a heck of a gun, although for some reason our local gunshop swears that they are trash.  This is the one I figure you are talking about for $205.  My Express will shoot anything I put through it, and has never once let me down.  Even to an untrained eye like mine, you can tell that the Wingmaster is the better gun, but still...

I wouldn't feel bad at all about defending my house or filling my freezer with either one.
