Ron

 I'm glad your happy with it. But to be honest, as you know, I was a little disapointed it didn't turn out better. I breathed in enough acetone fumes sucking out the oil in that stock to get the whole town of Lewistown high. I've yet to achieve the "perfect finish", something to strive for I quess. Rob

Mr Mom

 Thanks for the kind words. I can still see in my mind several flaws in the finish When I do my own stuff it's a little easier to be less crititcal, when do something for others it can drive you nuts striving for perfection. I really wish I could spend some time with a noted professional for awhile and pick up some pointers. I do enjoy it and it's a good winter hobby after hunting season has passed. Rob

Rob, may I remind you of something that a gunsmith that taught me about stockmaking once told me? He said, "Beware of perfection, it may pass you by." This is something that I dredge up when I am building a rifle for a client, usually I remember it too late......Kingpin

Kingpin

 Thats good advice. Sometimes I wish I had the same passion for rifles when I was younger that I do now and went into the trade. But then I think it may not be as fun as a hobby. My dad lost a lot of his passion for building hot rods once he started his own business and got overly involved. Now that he's retired we're going to build another one together. I can't imagine the stress involved in working with a blank with a four digit price tag. But then I quess when a person does it for a living their skills are much greater then my own and it's just another days work.

You guys are not going to be happy when I'm done with my Super Duper 10.22 target model Benchrest Stock Conversion. I cut that pretty laminated sucker just behind the wrist today, changed the drop, and stabbed it together with drywall screws. If you don't get too close it looks all right, and it feels a lot better, with a great cheek weld. I'll shoot it tomorrow and if I like it, I'll epoxy it tomorrow night and then worry how it looks.

As for other "pretty" guns...my tastes run toward the elemental. I'm too much of a klutz otherwise. My dad spent days bringing a Marlin 88 back from the dead for me. I really got the Evil Eye when I fell on the darn thing in some pointy rocks and "kustomized" it. Finally, I just had to strip it and use a dark matte finish on it. Harder to see the gouges that way.

Kwacker;

You should see the custom stock I've got on my 10/22.  It's a Hogue overmolded.  Matte black finish, no glare to spook gophers.  Bounces off rocks.  Costs less, tastes lousy.  Cheap too.

Fred, you were right about the alternator missing a side. So the order is out while I'm keeping the revs up. Kind of miss the 550 rpm lumpity idle, tho. My 65 year old retired fighter pilot Dad turned in his red Interceptor for an ST1100, equally red. Rode it a little, very nice and quiet, handles okay, but a behemoth. I would not like to get it bent out of shape and try to bring it back.

As for stocks, free is key in my case...already had it, already done all that bedding BS, so what the heck. I need to find a set of extension bolts and spacer plastic to make it all look pretty, but it's easier to shoot now. I don't understand why Ruger went with that droopy butt.

STILL haven't had time to "gopher," I went up to Eureka tonight for the Judge Molloy ruling lowdown from the USFS, depressing to see this town on its back. I had an extra hour so I stopped to try to get a train picture, on the way up the embankment I glassed enemy territory, they are still out in droves, so this weekend I'll ask around.
