i finally have all three molds that i intended to get for my .30-30 (113, 150 and 170 - all FP)!

lee recommends prepping the molds first, cleaning all oils out of the mold cavity and lubing the joints and pivots, then smoking.

anyone hace any feelings either way about this? i plan on doing it all, just wondering what the current ideas are on it.

I clean, smoke, then lube. I clean with carbourator cleaner and a swab. The cleaner the better, otherwise you'll have a hell of a time getting the bullets to fill out properly. Smoke the molds with matches, don't try candles. Candles will leave an oily residue, and you go back to cleaning. I have been useing Midway's Drop-Out lately with very good results....better than smoke. Then preheat your mold by dipping it into the pot. After it is heated up, I use a knife blade to apply bullet lube to the "V"s and sprue cutter  pivot. With a properly heated mold, you should get god bullets by the third or fourth pour.

I've used rubbing alcohol for mold cleaning and it works fine. Carb cleaner is a bit more aggresive cleaner, that's all.
