They had some "re-enactors" here abouts.

According ta them a small tub of bear grease was used in lieu of bug repellent.

Never heard that afore?  Sounds like a guy could wake up with a cougar lick'n his arm ta me!

I've used it, but it isn't real effective until it gets somewhat rancid. Then everything, and everybody, leave you alone! All in all, though, it was darn near as effective as DEET.

I rendered all the fat from my first bear years ago. I was going to use it for waterproofing my boots. I thought it would be a good hand softener. Wrong there.   It  soaked into all the old skin and calluses, drove out all thewater and left  all the old skin, hard and brittle. I had bleeding skin cracks on my thumbs.

Anyone else run into this problem with bear fat?

Yes, that is a curious property of it. Works good for baking, though. I don't know what the chemical in it is that causes the drying effect. i have found a couple times, that the fat will work as a tanning agent when doing a bear hide, and they can be softened with nothing else added. Just flesh, wash well in Ivory snow, and break down. Then smoke. Doesn't work every time, but as I say, I've had good luck on a couple.

SS,

PONYTAIL... Only time I've had a pony tail there was a Redhead on my lap.  Earring's go the same, I've still got a high and tight cut from my early military days - it's the only respectable way to live.

So I ain't allowed to bring no women with me to camp... ? ? ?

No women!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You know why the indians were such good hunters. They refrained from sex before they went. Made them want to kill something fatst and get back to camp
