s@b brass, hornady 140-grain spire point, cci 200 primer, h414, OAL 76 mm, which is 1mm shorter than previous attempts. 100 yards off sand bag. light breeze. temperature about 70 degrees F.

two groups of three shots over 41.5 grs of h414 went 1.24" and 1.361," both nice triangles. easy extraction, primers perfectly normal looking except 1 slightly cratered one. i think this and the other very slightly cratered primers were more of a function of the notoriously shallow s@b primer pockets than of pressure.

three rounds over 42.0 went 1.486," nice triangle, primers fine, extraction not quite slick.

three rounds over 42.5 went 1.361," nice triangle, slight cratering in two of three primers, but no flattening, extraction a tad stiff.

three rounds over 43.0 went 1.111," almost straight diagonal line running southeast to northwest. i suspect i just threw one. slight cratering in two of three primers, but no flattening, extraction a tad stiff.

because of the slightly stiff extraction at 43.0, i did not go on with strings over 43.5 and 44.0.

hmmmm ... the rifle with its tinhorn $25 tasco 4x has thrown every handload with h414 and imr 4831 so far into sub 1.5." i reckon i'll keep plugging.

i'm not sure what to make of your posts re the swede... are you unhappy w/ it? satisfied?

if i was doing load development for it, i would stick w/ one brand of cases until i was completely finished, then play w/ the others just to see. by varying the cases every time out, you are introducing variables that you are not in control of.

i see a trend emerging in your above post that indicates accuracy is coming around w/ more velocity... if you are maxed out w/ h-414 (pressure wise), i'd switch to a slower powder, and go from there.

just some comments from the peanut gallery... never even shot a swede, let alone loaded for one...

Hunting is not a matter of life or death; it is much more important than that.

dak:

in other posts, i noted that winchester cases had loose primer pockets after a couple of firings, some with moderate loads. had to switch. i'll probably stay with s&b for at least one more round of a slightly longer OAL. i'll probably start with 40.5, then go 41.0 and 41.5. if the groups do not tighten, then i'll consider switching to a slower powder. i have a very small shooting budget, so i have to wring everything i can out of a pound of powder. i think the 41.5 loads run close to 2,550, which is my target velocity anyhow, according to databases.

must ... invest ... in ... chrony ... but ... only ... after ...  weaver ... 6x ... is ... purchased ...
