I want to get the kid a good compass that will last the rest of his life.  I have seen some nice "thin" brass compass'es in days gone by but now all I see are these big huge compasses.

Any of you old salts know of a place thet carries good compasses?

Thanks,

Spot

Spot,

I don't have one - but for a lifetime investment get him a Marble in brass. I have a bookmark someplace and I'll look for it.

If you can find one, you cant beat a US military Engineer's compass. Do not buy a reproduction, get the real thing! US Calvery Store has them from time to time. It will run you in the neighbor hood of $100.00 or so. Probably a little less. Have had mine for almost 30yrs. It has never failed me. Ever. It is absoulutely neccisary for acurate land navigation,  serious/competitive orienteering or just plain bushwhacking.

I, being a 3rd year hunter, just use a regular ol' map compass and my gps. That combination is really good. You just find out where you want to go with the gps, find out what degrees it is, and then you follow your compass!

I use a Silva designed for orienteering. It has a clear plastic base with grid lines that line up on your map grids. It has an adjustable declination and some scale lines on the edge. It's about $25 and worth every penny. I've used it for about 20 years and it's like new. What ever you get make sure it's liquid filled.

The Silve Orienteering compass is the way to go. Not all that spiffy, but will last a life time plus of use.
