     Hey guys, what do you think about the Ruger #3 Carbine in .45-70. I found one on www.gunbroker.com for, buy now, 500 dollars. I would split the cost with my dad and the thing would be mine. It has a 4x Leupie scope () and it had a recoil pad installed (). The rifle is in mint condition and it comes with a Ruger sling.

I just found out where i am going to get my reloading stuff setup and i am going to set it up today or tomorrow! I should be pumpin out cartridges pretty soon. I just need some IMR 3031 powder and then i am all set. I am going to work up a load for my lefty aught six, my dad's number 1 .45-70 (these would be "magnum" loads so he can have fun!) and some loads for the #3 as soon as i get it. I will also get some .357 mag loads worked up for my dad's Ruger Bisley.

NH,
Think about this before you spend your money. The gun is ok but I don't care for the 45/70, but I don't need to like it as it isn't me buying it. The 45/70 work work well enough in the NH woods. But once its all said and done if you can reasonablly sell the gun for what you have in it it doesn't matter. If this gun doesn't suit you you can sell the gun and move on to another gun. The gun with scope you've found is at a good price.

You can read about the #3 and the 45/70 from Chuck Hawks rile page. The safety is on the tang so it works well for a lefty.

You might concider shooting a few boxes of shells through it before buying the reloading materials. Good luck.

I got some experience with the .45-70. It will help to have that recoil pad fitted on it, so as to dampen the kick of the 6 lb. rifle. I have been wanting one for a really long time, and have been searching for one for about a year or two and my vigilance has finally paid off! I think i am going to load something a little hotter than factory ammo, just because i can take the recoil of heavier loads, and it will improve ballistics. Is the #3 considered high wall or low wall or neither?

Neither, the #3 is the carbine form of the Ruger #1. The high and low walls were Browning designs that Winchester produced in the 1800 and early 1900s. Starting around 1970 Browning produced a single B78 that became the 1885 high wall and later the low wall as well. Read about all of them on the rifles page from Chuck Hawks. I've both the #3 as well as the Browning and like the Browning.

NH;

I'd take a good long think at the 3031 for the .30-06.  Not that it won't work mind you, but there are several powders considered to be more appropriate to the task.  In fact, I'm going to recommend that you buy at least 2 if not 3 reloading manuals first & read them before buying any more reloading equipment.

These make my list.  Speer #13,  Nosler #5, Hornady fifth ed., Lyman 48th ed., The NRA Handloader's Guide.  I also use other manuals, & not everything on the above list is the current edition in my library.  But any 2 here will give you a ton of good information.  This is not speed reading either.  You are about to embark upon the adventure of literally 'playing with dynamite'.  Remember the old carpenter's adage:  Measure twice, cut once.

Hey CB, i have the Lyman 47, so i should be all set. I think i also have a sierra and one other one. IMR 3031, according to the reloading manual, seems to be the most versitile out there when the manual was printed.

NH;

Just as an example;  Speer lists the 3031 as being suitable for the lighter bullets, but once you get to 150 gr & above, doesn't even reference it.  Not that it can't be used, but that it's so inefficient.  It doesn't make the top of the list for any bullet weight it is listed for.

Nosler 5th does not list 3031 for any loads or bullets for the .30-06.

Since a lot of people grew up reloading with 3031 it was, & still is, a very popular powder.  But, time marches on, progress gets made, & better powders for that application are available in the opinion of two very respected reloading sources.

    NH  Old Tj has owned lots of rifles in 30.06 And I have never had one that did not shoot well with IMR4350. With Bullets from 150 to 180. I also recomend Flat base bullets But thats more subjective. As for the 45/70 I have had good luck with RL-7.  Work you way up slowly with the Big boar it will thump you some. and the cartrige does not flatten out much no matter how fast you start the bullet ...tj3006

NH & Tj3006;

Yup, I'll second that IMR 4350 recommendation.  I use a fair amount of that the the -06.
