Topic: what’s your favorite smokeless? Posted: 23 January 2004 at 16:10 |
Just wondering if anyone sticks with one or another, uses many or whatever and why. I'm sure performance hounds use a little of each, how about you?
I've been a Hodgdon lover so far. Admittedly it is the only brand I've used, but have had excellent results with no need to try others, yet.

Copenhagen is my favorite. Second is Hodgdon. I use H4831 more than all my other's combined.

BKC;
I use more IMR 4350 than anything else - in rifles. However, I'm hard pressed not to say that N160 isn't my favorite. The VihtaVouri performs so very well in the .220 Swift & the 6.5 X 55. Since your poll gave me a headache, I didn't vote.
In pistols, it's Blue Dot, no question.

Since I shoot a hell of a lot, I stick mainly to the milsurp powders. Couldn't afford my habits with canister grade all the time.

Been hooked on IMR for 42 years. Mostly 4064 but I use tons of 4831 in the bigger Weatherby magnums.

I suppose Hodgdon would have to be called the fav, as I love H1000 and Retumbo in the smaller bore / larger cased magnum rounds and H110 in the revolver cartridges. I use and like IMR and Alliant, as well. >> klallen

the rl-series of powders has been very good to me thus far. i also use quite a bit of hodgdon. finally got rid of the last of my imr (fertilized the lawn w/ it)...
absolute favorite... hard to say... it really is a toss up between hodgdon and alliant.

I have no problem with any powder manufacturer/distributer's products. I'm partial to Alliant for handgun powders, and IMR for full power and cast rifle loads.
Handguns, I use a lot of Unique, Bullseye, 2400, and AA9
Rifles, IMR 3031, IMR4895, IMR 4831, and AA2520
Cast Bullet rifle loads, SR4759, IMR4198, 5010 (surplus)

Winchester and Hogdon for Shotshell and revolver loads. Rex for shotshells. IMR, Vhitavouri and Reloder for rifle. Basically what ever the manual calls for to strike a balance between accuracy and velocity.
Federal 215 primers for my .257 Robt's loads, Fed primers for most all except for shot shell. THe powder cabinet needs to be enlarged and the shelves have been braced to hold the boxes of bullets. Like diff. loads and to experiment a little.

Use ADI,2206.2209.2213sc, 2217,2218, 2225, who make a lot of Hogdons powder any way but I have had success with IMR and RL and V for that matter. Each rifle has a mind of its own and 223 seem to like Winchester powders or varget just to confuse the issue.Macca

Poll's going as I expected so far, though I thought IMR would be up with Hodgdon, keep voting!
Macca, I picked up a new powder the other week, H4895, and as you said, I noticed it was made in Australia, you guys better make a good pruduct!

I like and use the powders from many manufacturers. Norma of Sweden held my top vote for years, but it has become increasingly difficult to buy here in Canada. Alliant has been supplying some Swedish made powders that now appear to be the same as Norma. I like Vihtavuori powders, Had good success with Hodgdon, Accurate and IMR, Used dozens of pounds of Winchester, as well as some Milsurp sphericals. All have done the job very satisfactorily when used in the niche they were intended to fill. The hundreds of animals have never noticed the difference in the powders I have used. Targets don't care either. Regards, Eagleye

Can't answer for a favorite powder. Each has a best choice for max accuracy and max velocity for each rifle.
There's no question for preferred bullets and primers.
Three different 308 Win rifles want different powder/bullet usage to meet my standard.
Please ignore dust and clutter. It's been about 16 months since I reloaded cartridges. I won't show my reloads. Feds might visit me. Heh! Heh!

Well what the heck. I'm simplistic, translate that to 'poor,' so my selection is fairly small.
I should add the ammo boxes on top are only sized and primed brass, all ammo is kept upstairs in my cabinet.

bk - The top boxes are not normally used. The 2 Win and Rem boxes 2nd from left are old-old original boxes of factory loads for collector status.
