We went calling yesterday, the WIND Finally dropped to calling levels and on a weekend.
The boy had his 204 and a buddy had his bolt Creedmoor SO I took my 45colt.
I am not sure what changed. Last year we did 24 trips out calling and go one coyote and maybe saw two more that's it. This fur season we could only make it out between -30* Mud, snow and WIND 5 times so far. BUT we got at least one coyote each time and "Saw" coyotes at moist sets.
Fur is finished as you can see the winter hair is all gone and a very clean summer coat is on the dogs.
OK the story.
Daybreak/ shooting light found us in one of our best producing areas with the "right " wind to call it
Again last year we hit it a few times and never sat a track or heard a howl. This year we set up like snipers. The boy to the south with his shockwave My buddy about a 1/4 mile to the north, buried in a large sage brush growth.
It is a LARGE Coulee I was down lower laying on an old Dirt dam with my x5 foxpro softly playing pup in distress. Like 6 minutes a coyote showed and like an arrow headed to my call with another about 75 yards behind.
I have the 45lc at the ready with the red dot centered on it. At about 85 yards for what ever reason the rear dog barked and spun and ran out of sight, making the front one stop and reanalyze her situation. She turned and was about to split too when the 204 popped her eye out.
So close. No fur to save so just a picture and we left.

Three more set, 5 more coyotes, no shots.
Then one blank one only a lot of trash talk but no sightings.
Last set snowing and fog was settling in making it quit Uncomfortable and hard to se much over 150 yards. We are shooting across a 100 foot deep break, so I had my 22/250. Same set up spared across the top a 1/4 mile just below the top edge one facing north one in the center looking across the 200 yard wide coulee and I was on the south lookout. About 13 minutes I here the 6.5 bark and WHAPP. I could not see the coyote but my buddy saw it long enough to pull the trigger. Just on the skyline with the bino's We could make out a splattered coyote. Good thing we were not saving fur I DID NOT want to go get it.
VERY fun day.
Big smile

Coyote hunting is fun even if you don't get any fur.

It's odd that you didn't see much last year. I guess all that matters is that they are back.
I have always considered myself to be quite the bullshitter, But ocasionally it is nice to sit back and listen to a true professional......So, Carry on.
