Well, I got a lee 452 300 gr with gas check mold.
LEE 90359 .452 DIAMETER 300 GRAIN 2-CAVITY BULLET MOLD C452-300-RF I'm using fairly hard lead from Cast ingots a buddy dad made up for bullets. I have an old but good lead pot, it has a temp setting and I'm running it at 760*. I did a lot of reading on it and I'm using powdered Graphite for flux. It seems to work very well, with no smoke and NO slag on top or in the bottom when I was done. The mold is listed at,452 and 300 gr. I'm getting fully formed out bullets that are very smooth and shiny, I drop them in water to cool. There dropping at 303 to 304 gr. before adding the check. I do have a question, the molds are for 45 colts but there coming out at .4515 in size before being sized. Colts are supposed to be .452. Is there a fix or will there be a problem? It does shoot 45 acp's which are .451. I have not loaded any yet, what would you do? |

I have looked around on the net and a common answer is to try them and see how they work as is. I'm going to powered coat them anyway and that will make them a smidge fatter.
If not I bet I could get a "round burr" that is the same size and shape, for my Dermal and simply run it around the deep parts of my Aluminum die I'm only looking for .002" Even if it was not prefect the sizer would make it round and the right size.

Well, all is well. Apparently, My cheap calipers were very cold, being stored out in the shop. I took them over to my boy's loading room and used his they all measure .453 on the dot before sizing. They size up great and the check works great too right at .452. He did the hardness thing and it came out to 51? whatever that means it is way closer to the top, harder, then to the bottom, softer. We are going out tomorrow and try to shoot cottontail with it, and test the loads I forget the powder we will try but the 300 gr velocity is listed from 3200 to 3500 fps. We will see if the red dot holds up I bet. I'll let you know how it goes. |

Well D this post contains a lot of numbers. .453 is a perfect size. Why bother running them through anything other than your 7.5” sizer? 51 must be Rockwell hardness? Most lead casters use the Brinell scale of around 12-20. Velocity 3200-3500? Even loaded in a necked down .470 Nitro Express those numbers are not attainable. The Las Vegas over/under odds on that sight are 60. I’m betting on the under. I have enjoyed following your journey with this .454 Casull Black Hawk.

YUP mis print. I was thinking of a 110 30/06 load we are working on 1200 to 1300 fps.

M son worked up some loads for me today. Starting low and we worked up to 22 gr IMR 4227 with the 304 gr .452 gas check bullets. They should be around 1200 fps, not too bad on the recoil, and seam to shoot good. We have a 7"X7" steel plate we put out at 25 yards 75 feet shot off a shooting bag with a 2X6 board on the top. Started with 19 gr, and went to 23. 20 shots all hit the plate but the 23 gr the recoil was very harsh and the 22 shot as well so we settled with it. He also did some trail boss, 5 gr that shot very well and very light recoil all 304 gr cast bullets. I shot a cottontail with the big loads at 33 yards.I'll try some 193 cast next. |

Nice shooting. I bet they spank that steel plate pretty hard? I do not have any 45LC load data for 300-304 gr bullets. I found some 45-70 Contender loads with 300gr jacketed out of a 10” barrel. 27.0gr of IMR 4227 makes 1062fps. |

My Ruger 45 colt hit way too high using the iron sights and 300 grain bullets. Red dot might have been the answer but I diverted of to the 357 Max in a contender.
