Guess I'm ancient.
just found out my backpack is "classic" with vintage campers. Seems to me I bought the Camp Trails large external frame pack in 1970, just a little while ago. It is a welded aluminum external frame with a large canvas bag. Keeps you cool as it sits off your back, and can carry heavy loads 80# is (was) my max on a 58 mile hike into the adirondacs. Over the years beside backpacking it has been my trapping basket and game hauler. Since I can't drag deer any longer (nor any shorter) it goes in the truck so I can butcher deer in the woods where they fall. Takes two trips out but fine and no falls for me with a staff. Anyone using an external backpack???? you could then be called vintage.

I have a pack frame for hauling meat. (Kinda the same thing)
The thing I like about it is it's very lightweight. I have carried a front and rear elk quarter at the same time and it wasn't that bad. I like vintage stuff better than the new fangled stuff almost every time, but I'm starting to realize lighter is better. Wing master

wing, do you skin the quarters in the field, or do you leave it on till home?
Do you have a pack bag or just rope it on to the frame?

I leave the hide on to keep the meat cleaner. I don't use a bag. I just tie them on the pack with para cord.
I leave a little more of the leg than I would have to but that makes it easier to tie them and not have them move. Wing master
