I'm looking to try a different bullet in my T/C 22/250 for coyotes. I know a 22/250 is the upper end on fur keeper list of cartridge, but.
The alternative is my 6, there is NO fur bullet for the 6. Anyway. Right now I'm using Berger 52 gr hunting bullets. Supper accrete and semi fur friendly. BUT they don't always "Kill". I know a LOT of my shots on coyotes are not Steller but some run offs are a surprise. I used some Winchester 45gr factory shells in the beginning, they shot well. The listed velocity is 4000 fps. They were a Varmint bullet but They where horrible killing coyotes, A LOT of run offs and tended to "Splash" on the shoulder shot and not enter the body. Then I used game king 53 gr shot VERY well but tended not to open up on very close shots and act like a FMJ. Great on fur but I had to chase most ALL the coyotes. In My 6 I use Varmageddon 55 gr at 4200 fps. There are no run offs but the fur takes a beating. I just ordered 500 62 gr Varmageddon 22 caliber https://palmettostatearmory.com/nosler-varmageddon-22-62-gr-fbhp-rifle-bullet-w-cannelure-250-box-36522.html I don't know what powder we will use yet. Anyone have thought about the bullet vs coyote? And any one ever order from palmettostatearmory.com ? That's about 20 cents a bullet delivered, good price. |

First off, great job on the calling.
I used to use Match Kings, 54 gr. HP. Held tight at just an inch at 300 yards and were quite nice on varmints up to deer in close. I wouldn't recommend any .22 caliber for deer, but it did make fine work for headshots in the rig I used. I noticed in close they acted more like a FMJ and tumbled instead of expanding. Past 200 they excelled and performed admirably which is probably not a good thing for hides. Never had to track a groundhog, coon, possom, or quill carrier. Destruction was impressive!

If your shots are 300yds and less, try slowing them down to 3200 fps. Still a flat shooter, but not explosive.

I agree with Bear. A touch slower and, I would think, a well built bullet will not expand so explosively and cause so much fur damage.

I like Palmetto State Armory. They have good prices and a good selection.
If you like getting emails sign up to be on their email list. They will send about 5 every day. When I first started reloading I loaded for my 22-250. I had no idea about twist rate and bullet weight. I think I will put it on my list of things to do this winter. Wing master
