Montana, crane hunting in the pacific flyway is kinda new but growing.
This year there was a new area, they gave out 20 permits with a draw.
The Boy got a tag. We have been looking for crane for close to 2 months, seeing a few, but not finding where there eating or roosting. This weekend we went goose hunting at one of our normal spots.
I have been hunting there for 55 years, never once did I see a crane there. Not a tree in 40 miles alkali flats abound.  YUP we found crane, the mud is loaded with tracks and we watched 150 in 30 bird flocks land just off where we could hunt.
Today he went out with our 3 crane decoys. He could not get any to come over the fence where he could shoot.  A 4 bird flock did land 400 yards away from him and where shootable. He put the sneak on then they jumped up at 65 yards he shot but did not connect.  BUT a hundred that where off his area, got up and flew right over his pack and decoys. DANG no crane yet.
BUT this weekend we did find Grizzly tracks in the mud right were we parked the boat.

Looks just like bear country to me...
