Well I'm tagged out, kinda, still have an elk, wolf, and bear tag, but there unlikely to be filled. SOOOO.
The moon will be about right and the temps will be above freezing the wind is still undetermined. I have sucker and we are not afraid to use it. Burbot are a crazy fish the get active in the dark and spawn under the ice. They look like a cat fish eel cross. Most people don't even know they exist, and fish the same waters for years and never see one. We find them in the Missouri river drainage and some reservoirs.
You fish for them at night when there is little or no moon light on the water, mostly after Halloween.
My little Granddaughter get a BIG kick out of catching them. Often time ( we can fish with two poles) we have 4 on at a time, what a rodeo. In the dark with a foot of slippery bank to stand on and a freezing cold river gushing by, Good times for sure.Big smile
I hope the wind behaves she is looking forward to it before the river freezes up.

Best tasting fish in the state of Montana. I like them better than walleye or perch. Which is saying a lot because I really enjoy walleye and perch. I can't believe how under fished ling are. They get no respect. The have them in Flaming Gorge Reservoir on the Utah/Wyoming border. They don't have a limit on them and want the eradicated from the lake. If l lived further north I'd fill up my freezer with them. Best of luck to you and your grand daughter. Please post some photos so I can live vicariously through your success.

Most the meat is in the tale portion of a ling.
Most people skin them and poach them in water or beer.
I don't like the look of the meat cooked like that, it's all gray and looks slimly.
I like to chunk it up and batter it and fat fry it, in bacon grease if you have it.

My favorite way is to use a Cajun fish batter I get from Walmart. Deep friend and it's heaven on a plate. Works great for walleye, perch, and catfish as well.

They were/are called "lawyer" here in WI

TASTE AND NUTRITION

Most commercial fishers will readily agree that burbot is a little-known delicacy. Its firm, white flesh resembles that of cod and haddock, which should be no surprise since it is a member of the freshwater cod family. It is often served as “Poor Man’s Lobster” by steaming chunks of meat and dipping them in drawn butter. Burbot is also excellent when fried.

The vitamin D potency of burbot liver oil is as high as that obtained from cod liver. Almost a hundred years ago it was discovered that foxes raised in captivity and fed burbot had better quality fur. The liver was found to be very high in vitamin D and A even when compared to good grades of cod liver oil. A burbot’s liver is about 10% of its body weight and six times bigger than that of other freshwater fish of the same size.

HOW THEY ARE HARVESTED

Burbot is classified as a rough fish by the state of Wisconsin, meaning that it is an unregulated fishery. The burbot has never been of commercial importance in the state because of its low market demand. Even in the very early years of commercial fishing on the Great Lakes, most burbot were discarded from whitefish and lake trout nets, except for a few sent to local markets. This is still the case today, except for one enterprising commercial fisherman on Door County’s Washington Island. Ken Koyen fishes for burbot and serves them up at his restaurant KK Fiske and The Granary.

CONSUMPTION ADVICE

State health agencies have found that it is safe to eat Lake Michigan and Lake Superior burbot once a week.

BIOLOGY AND HISTORY

Also known as eelpout, lingcod and lawyer, the burbot looks like a cross between an eel and a cod—it has a long body with smooth skin and a single barbel, or whisker, on its chin. The burbot is a member of the freshwater cod family, and it shares many characteristics with its saltwater cousin, including mid-winter spawning. Burbot have an odd habit of wrapping their slimy tails around the hand or arm of unsuspecting anglers when caught. Perhaps because of this behavior, and their slimy eel-like appearance, the burbot has never been a popular sport or commercial species in the Great Lakes despite its excellent taste.

The burbot is one of two predatory fish species native to the Great Lakes. The other is the lake trout. Both species were decimated by the invasive sea lamprey, but the burbot recovered on its own while the lake trout has required ongoing restoration efforts, especially in Lake Michigan. Some biologists have suggested that burbot may be hindering these restoration efforts because they prefer to eat young lake trout, but more research needs to be done to understand fully the role of burbot in the current Great Lakes ecosystem that now includes many nonnative species.

We caught a couple when I was a kid out of Yellowtail Resevour in Montana. I don't remember if we ate them but I do remember thinking they looked scary at least to a 10 year old.

That was a fun trip. we had a bear get into our camp while we were out fishing.

The trip.
We headed in to a 35 mph wind and 45* as the sun went down.
More snow and ice on the ground as we went. As it got dark the suicidal deer came to the edge of the road and were looking for victims. Just because I HAVE a huge deer guard does not mean I want to use it.
Anyway we got to our Linging grounds with out incident. We had an audience of about 20 does watching with great interest.
We waddled through a two foot deep drift to the rivers edge.
I was greatly relived to see a three foot clear flat spot to set up on.
It was grass and gravel so no mud. A milk crate with my 20 pound Propane bottle lantern and a 50,000 btu propane burner for some heat. 4 fishing poles with ling rigs on and a half a sucker that we keep from summer fishing trips just for ling. Two fold up chairs and one bundled up GD. About 5 trips, it was only about 25 yards but a steep bank and snow drift. I picked this spot just for the fact of the wind. It is a camp ground with out houses and street lights in the parking spots. But the biggest plus was it was under the S.SW wind.
A hunk of sucker WITH the skin on a one OZ sinker and a hook attached to the swivel that held on the sinker and out in to the blackness it went, Then another then the other two. Just settling down with some hot tea and a snack, our head lights scanning all three poles. The Forth was in a spot that we had to "LOOK" at to see.
YUP I happen to LOOK at it and it is bent to the ground and trying to slide in to the river. By time I got the GD aware and heading to save the pole it stopped, dang. Twenty minutes or so later GD and I where both glued to the center pole with the lights. In Ling faction It was slowly going down and stopped. LING on she snatches the pole before I could tell her. Ling don't fight aggressively fight but they do try to snag you on rocks on the bottom. Her being an experienced linger, knew how to get it in, tip high and reel like mad. Poof we had one on the snow. Ling need to have circle hook which did not have or they swallow it up to the sinker. That is why the snap swivel, just un snap the hook put another one on rebait and back in to the water. Ling come in schools the more your in the water the more fish. That's the way it went to about 9:00pm, when we got tired and had an hour and part trip home, we kept two for her and her mom for Saturday dinner. Big smile Fun times.
