Can't drag any longer.  So trying something new, Field quartering and back packing out (two trip).  This means I can hunt deeper than the 200 yards I've been restricted to for the last 3 years.

Question, the states I hunt all have laws requiring utilzation of game meat on a kill.

What is you opinion on Field quartering, ie  taking 4 quarters, and both back straps only.  this means no ribs, no neck meat and no tenderloins.  (I'll miss those tenderloins).

legal?  ethical?

All thoughts/opinions appreciated.

Under Montana law, it is illegal to waste any part of a game animal that is defined as “suitable for food.”   For big game animals, all four quarters above the hock, including loin and backstrap, are considered suitable for food. Wanton waste of fish and game is not only illegal, it’s unethical.

In Wyoming you have to take the tenderloins.

Several years ago I asked the lady that owned Olds Processing about rib and neck meat. She said they cut up up to 200 animals a day at the beginning of the season. They didn't have time to fool with neck and rib meat.

I guess my thought is if you take it to a processor you're probably not loosing any meat if you leave it in the field.

Colorado, all edible parts...which are, 4   quarters, tenderloin and backstrap.

That said, unless the truck is close, I do not quarter.   Quartering implies taking 4 quarters, AND the backbone, and neck.

The newest rage is the gutless method.  I have not watched these videos, the came up in a 1 second search.

What I do is bone it out.    You could do a search for that.  Gut it, skin it. cut the legs off (bone, or not, depending on the distance), bone the carcass, bone the neck, tenderloins and back strap, hang em all as you go, and start making trips.

thanks Stinky.

IMO the tenderloins are the best part.  I hate to leave them in.  But seems to me I'd have to gut to get them out.

Some body told me that he had a way to get the tenderloins with out gutting????

I did debone a black bear in the woods...to heavy to drag.  hide can't be eaten.

If it falls 3 feet from your SUV do you still have to quarter it?

Maybe a winch in the back seat would help?

Not sure. I assume that, that video shows how. Im sure that there is a video on youtube that shows how.

Here is what I've heard...after skinning and boning and removing the legs, that there is a way to tilt the carcass, up or to one side and you can stick your hands in and remove em, behind the guts.

Each harvest is dif. But, if I'm close, or actually if it is close to the PU, the ribs come w.me.

I just gut the thing...cut off the legs (if you are way the hell and gone out there, the bones come out of the legs too) and hang them, then bone out the carcass and neck, put the meat in a game bag and then call for a helicopter (I wish). Ohh, skinning is in there too.

Oh, BTW, Teddy wrote, in one of his books about SD, that elk tongue is a delicacy. I have not shot an elk since reading that, But, I can tell you that antelope doe tongue is a little small.

.....well.....if you go for a rib shot with a 5" deck gun, you bypass the field dressing part completely...maybe even the quartering part. Just grab a bag and pick up what you want to take with you.

DE-BONING

This is a pretty good video on deboning in the woods.

I'd like to do this, but body, legs and calves can't take an hour of squatting...cramps and can't stand up then!

I note he guts first, so easy out tenderloins.

I have used the gutless field dressing on elk. I have gotten the tenderloins but didn't get the whole tenderloin.

It's been a few years, but if I remember right after you remove the rear quarters you can reach in and get to about 3/4 of the loins.

I could be forgetting a step but I do remember getting the loins.

I've heard of that.  But once and animal is dead and down, I think the trauma and gut weight changes the body cavity and 'stuff' gets in the way of coming in from below the ribs.  One method I saw was to open the gut cavity just as you would when gutting the animal, that lets some of the stuff fall out and give a little room to reach in behind the ribs and get lions.  Seems like almost as much work as just gutting the criter?

I agree Bear. I didn't really think it saved much time or work doing the gutless method. And I didn't get the whole tenderloin.

Elk tenderloins are like gold. I hate to waste any of it.
