So many x-hairs offered with lots of markings on the X.
Do most people like these?

I have a couple and they can get pretty "busy" if you need to shoot fast. But are OK if you are on a good rest, have the time and know your distance so you can pick the correct line for that distance. Not for whitetail hunting off yer hind legs and shooting that way.Wink

I don't like the new "busy" reticles!

Much prefer a duplex.
For longer ranges I like a mil-dot.

I'm with duplex all the way.

In 1962, I designed a BD x-hair and had Unertle build a scope with it.  Disaster.  too busy.
But I still have that scope 10x.

I also prefer a plain old duplex.

It seems like the newer scopes are a lot better quality than the older ones. I have a Leupold LRP that I can dial the turrets and it is right on if I know the ballistics of the load I'm shooting.

The busy reticles don't work good on a second focal plane scope. From what I've seen they are only accurate when the scope is at the highest magnification. First focal plane scopes might be different but I've never used one.

Wing you are right on about the 2nd focal plane scopes and mark is only "ON" when set at highest setting or maybe a lesses magnification but one or the other depending manufacturer I'd guess... I have a few like that. No idea about 1st focal plane scopes...don't have any.

Ever try shooting one of the German tri-posts?  Seems like the whole image is cluttered with them big things stickin' left, right 'n up.  I got one fer my Brno 7x57R/12ga, a 6x that I can't spot anything through, but it goes on and off without losing zero.  Then I heard of an outfit in England that made a standard 1" mount, and got a Leupold Vari-X 1-4x to go in it; much lighter than the integral scope-and-mount Zeiss, and it too returns to zero.  The duplex vari-X is much nicer for trying to hit a bird on the wing.  But now that I've got my eyes back--cataract surgery--I can see the open sights the gun came with!  Don't know if I'll ever use the scopes again, and now the combo gun has to take its turn--I can see the open sights on my leverguns again, and they carry much lighter than the Brno.

My Brno double wears a leopold  2-7x .  with Cateracts, Glaucoma, and retinia scars from laser surgery,  that scope will always be on there.  Mine is  8x57jr in both barrels, sort of one of my black bear guns.  It has a duplex x-hair.

I had one scope with a post, loved it 1-4x. used it on deer mostly under 150yds.  those thick posts really do stand out in thick woods and in low light.   Leupold and some othes offe that German post, but never found one in a store.  Must be special order?

It seems twisting knobs and all kinds of dots, dashes and lines are the rage these days. I am a simple creature I guess, duplex and standard turrets, no twisting for me. Oh, and I don't have a single 50mm either, sets way too high off my rifle to be comfortable. I do have a couple of the post reticles, they work slick here in the big woods. It seems these simple things are getting harder and harder to find these days. The tactical guys that think they are gonna shoot a deer 954yrds away seem to be driving the market. I've walked enough in the big woods of the east and the wide open prairies of the west to know a 15lb 28" heavy barrel rifle ain't for me, I'll work on getting closer!

I have both focal plain styles. Each has it's purpose. BDC reticles give me a rash except on my ATN 80mm tube, it has a purpose. Illuminated dot moves to distance by way of the top dial for range to be used. Handy. My Nikon has the "Rings", and I hate them. I'm sure some folks like the clutter and not being able to see the lower half of the target with them, but it's not my bag. A clean thin duplex is my thing these days. Current Vortex has a thicker duplex but for the range it's used, it's still quite usable.
...oh yeah! thats gonna hurt!
