How much over pressure is there when primers 'crater'?

Pictures? I have had cratered primers without over pressure. Certain rifle/primer combos do it.

Same. I've had IMI cases show major symptoms of over pressure on the pockets with base loads. Some pockets need reamed just a tad to fit right. It's weird, but some don't. Seems to be a QA problem with some brass. Always best to check them all before you load them....yeah....it's a pain. Many years ago I loaded a mess of nosler brass, new, still in an unopened box. 98 of the hundred would not take a primer to where it would seat flush. Doesn't seem to matter the make either as I have had the same issue with all makes at one time or another. Range brass with extractor marks I just drop in the scrap. If you can load the pockets right and still get primers blowing back out and cratering, you got issues. If that's the case, best check the mic's, case necks etc. for other signs. Never had a primer back out under extreme pressure but I have heard horror stories! Those were all compressed loads that I wouldn't shoot without body armor on or a grizz nibbling on certain parts I might wanna keep. I definitely want to hear how you make out with this issue and the cause. I haven't loaded in many a moon and would like to hear what cuases it in your situation.

craters are almost always an over pressure thing.

I used some over loaded shells from and old manual, tey cratered.  I've reduced the load 8%.  just wondering how much pressure I had.  wild guess 20% greater.

60 years ago I loaded everything hot, P++.   blew a lot of primers cleanly out of pocket.  dumb kids.

Had some back out in handgun loads but with rifle I always see case neck issues and flattening of the rim. Had some 300 Weatherby loads that were compressed with 220gr. SP's. Brutal to shoot! Fair amount of split case mouths. I only shot 10,(too many), and half were ready for the scrap....as was my shoulder. Found out early on, if you need to crank em up that hot and high, just get a bigger and faster tool for the job. Always room for another in the safe....if not, get another safe!
