IBD, IIRC you are in WI. I traveled thru there on my way to MT and saw one of the, if not the, biggest whitetail buck I have ever seen on the hoof there. Trotting alongside I90 north of Madison...MONSTER.
Wing, IIRC you are in WY...same terrain as MT, 200yds is a chip shot, 300 is more norm, 400+ is there if you can do it. WI is more like here, heavily wooded, mixed hardwood ridges, thick hemlock, spruce swamps. My 30-30 has served me well, but I have taken deer with several different rifles. 308, 280, 30-30, 35Rem, 450Marlin, 35Wh, 30-06, 243, 300Win, 7mmRem, shots have ranged from 10-15yds to 108yds with the avergae being maybe 50yds. In Montana I used my 284Win and 25-06 and have performed flawless, 185yds and 258yds. IMHO, the bullet used is a bigger factor than the cartridge pushing it. I have settled on Sierra Game Kings or Hornady Interlocks for deer duty. A short, light rifle is the answer for me around here, I have used several models, I think this fall my Ruger 77 Hawkeye in 358 will get the nod, it has a shortened 20" barrel and a 1.75-6X32 VX3. I have forgo my fall Mulie trip this year to bring my boys out to shoot some p-dogs, so I will not get any field testing done on another rifle/scope/load combo this year in the vast MT prairies...but I will (hopefully) get to field test my 22 CFs finally!

I have several 7mm rm's. They do just about everything well in NA. I like the 175's simply because they cover the spectrum. Twist is everything with a caliber that has so much range. The 175's are fast enough that on deer they exit and bears over 400 expand completely. Turkeys are head shot so little matter there. Most critters are taken in close where the 7 is not an optimal choice, however my last turkey was at 176 paces and in the neighbors strippings shots from the ledges can be had well over 300 yards if the guy squeezing the trigger was comfortable enough. For an all around tool, it's hard to beat.

JSG, can't disagree any anything you said. The 7mag is a great performer. I use mostly 160s in mine, but the 175s I feel would be just as good.

I like the heavies because of the big bears. Accuracy is everything. I wouldn't use them otherwise. The seven is overkill for turkey sure, but accurate enough that head shots at ranges to 200 are not an issue. They expand enough to be used on deer sized game out way beyond my comfort zone and still hold together well enough for a decent 4-500 pound bear to 200 as well and lodge in the off side. Just a good choice for those who don't have the means for multiple tools for different purposes.

In 2016 I shot an antelope at 387 yards. I normally wouldn't take a shot that long but the conditions were right. That was with a .308.
Later that year I shot an elk at around 225 yards with the same rifle and the same load. I definatly see the benefit to using a 7mm Mag but I don't think it is completely necessary to have a magnum round to hunt "out west". I have noticed that I shoot lower recoiling rifles a lot more accurately than I do bigger cartrages. That's why they make so many different rifles in so many different calibers. What works for one guy might not be the best choice for the next guy. Wing master

I gotta agree with you on that one Wing. I generally don't shoot paper much with the 7 due to too many pulls after say 6-10 shots. Just plain no fun with it anymore. But under field conditions I never notice it or feel it much less fire it enough to worry about it. I have other lighter tools for paper that don't beat me up. I have the same issue with my 375's I can get the first few tight, then I start pulling them. If I had the time and money to spend at the bench I'm sure I could overcome the issue with simple basics...it's a mental thing. I have a great deal of confidence in the platform for in the field, I've never second guessed a round fired. The 116 had a brake on it and even with double the gear, still would make your ears ring. It was my goto bench gun for almost a decade and then just my goto hunting rifle for another 20. Just plain worked. I trained out the pulls and twitches a long time ago but after so many years away from the bench....makes me curious why I put myself through all of that abuse.

Agree with everything you said as well Wing. I don't hunt with any "magnums" much. Not saying I won't, I do have a 7mmWby that I'm dying to take out there to see how it does. It is one of the most accurate rifles I have ever owned. If I went after elk or moose I would take one of my magnums, just simply because I wouldn't use them for anything else. I am trying to shoot something with all the rifles I own and it is a slow process.

The reason I kinda wish I would have kept my 7mm Mag would be for shooting long range steel. My gunsmith has a range just outside of town that has steel targets that go out to a mile.
The thing is it was an older Sako FinBear and I think a long range target gun needs either a muzzle brake or a supressor. I couldn't bring myself to have the barrel threaded. Maybe I will keep an eye out for a .264 Win Mag. I'm thinking that should be a good long range rifle. I have heard that the barrel life isn't that great with that caliber. Wing master

I think I will stick with my Swede for now. It's pretty accurate.

I like 140 grain Partition bullets with IMR7828, works well in my aged M70. Alas, we are now lead-free and it looks like TTSX for in-state hunting. They don't shoot the same...

TomP long time no see.
We shoot a lot of ttsx, with GREAT performance. Kinda our "GOTO" bullet. I'm using it in my 8mm rem mag 200 gr 3200 fps.
