just wonder what folks think was the best handgun every made...not necessarily the best at the time it was designed.

So you don't confuse the word "handgun" with a media definintion:  Handgun  is an autoloading, revolving cylinder, single shot, any firearm MADE to be shot with one hand for support.

I'll start with the Colt Python (circa  1955)  357 chanber, reliable, balanced and beautiful.

the 1911 has stood the test of time, a favorite of mine....the Python had to be redesigned when it was re-introduced recently...S&W very good....

...but I think the Ruger Security-Six is best handgun ever made.....357Mag & .38Spl calibers. Extremely strong, no side-plate to take off to get at inerds, coil main spring...boolet proof!

I am also a big fan of the time tested 1911. It works and works well.

But, In my opinion the best handgun ever made is the Smith & Wesson. Combat Magnum. Later named the the Model 19. It's a .357 Magnum.  Also my opinion is that the best of the best is the 4 inch barreled version.

I have one in each barrel length and they are all extremley accurate and the 4 inch is easy to carry and draw from a holster and also has a little longer sight radius.

Just my opinion

Current combat magnum is the 69

I love tactical T-rex.

I'm basically a fan of the four inch revolvers with the exception of the Ruger Blackhawk in a five or the Bisley. Both excellent revolvers. The 629 with rubber grips is on my list. My brush popper is a cheap Rossi 971 that looks like it has been run over by heavy equipment a time or two, small framed four inch and just plain works. Think a more svelte version of a GP101, park an Abrahms tank on it and do a few donuts...pretty much have what I abuse the most. Kinda surprised nobody has chimed in with the big X-frames.

My experience is limited to DA Ruger revolvers, S&W revolvers and Glocks. Although I have a Walther PP and think it is one of the neatest pistols I've ever had my hands on, I think the S&W N frames are close to the best handgun ever made. The K frames would be next IMHO.  The L's are nice, but you could get anything you needed done with an N29 and a K17. I see no real reason to spend money on an X frame. They are uncomfortable to shoot, and you need a flatbed to haul it around. I'll take a 44 S&W or Ruger anyday thanks. And if for some crazy reason the good ol' 44 ain't enough, you can step up to a Ruger SRH in 454 or 480, still in a manageable package. The semi-auto pistols have a purpose and are fun to shoot, but nothing beats a wheelgun.

The problem with the "new" Combat Magnum is that it has that damn internal lock. When S&W caved to the government on that one I lost all respect for them and don't buy new guns from them.

By the way I collect older S&W's.

After thinking about this question I got to thinking about the Model 27 Smith & Wesson. I went out to the safe and compared the two.

Before they assigned model numbers to S&W's the 27 was origionally the Registered Magnum. It is the only S&W with a checkered top strap. I have a 5 inch and I think it is the perfect barrel length for an N frame. A little bigger and heavier to carry but i'm having a hard time deciding between the two.

I hunt with handguns.  So I'd add the Thompson Contender, it started the hand cannon thing.   Accurate as a rifle, great balance in the hand.  figure I'd say in 30 Herret; it has the same energy at 100 yards that a 44 mag has at the muzzle!  think on that.

Yes, I have 5 barrels.  It is the lightweight model.  feels like a pistol, althought you can easily add a rifle barrel and stock.  The encore is the new model, toooo heavy to be a pistol but 10" barrels fit.
