Well, I have never hunted turkeys before. I was always chasing dogs in field trials when the turkey craze took off here years ago. We have quite a few birds around, even with a significant decline in the last couple years, we see some good toms here. Well my oldest son mentioned he wanted to give it a go this year. My good buddy called and asked if Matt wanted to go the youth weekend...heck ya! My buddy Brian, is a very accomplished turkey hunter. Well up at 4:30 this AM to a spot he had where we roosted a good tom the night before. Set up on him and in he comes at daylight. Big bird, gets to within 10yds of shooting range and something in the field spooks him, cat, fox, something...he gone. DANG, so close! Well we drive around to a couple other known good spots to no avail. So we head to our place. Pull in to our lot and don't get out of the truck and we hear the gobblers! We drive around by our house and out in the lot. Setup quick cause they are coming. Buddy calls and 2 good toms come in, just at the edge of range, but won't separate enough to get a clean shot (son tells me, proud Dad moment) they eventually work away, still gobbling like crazy. Mean time my wife texts me, there is a big gobbler and 2 hens in our meadow she see from the house! We regroup cause there are 2 more toms!! CLOSE! We setup again within 10yds of where we were, buddy starts calling behind us, I see him coming, son is ready! He comes around the point BAM, BIG BIRD DOWN!!! I'm pumped, son is pumped my buddy is pumped! One of the best feelings in the world for me! My boys first game animal! With my old Mossberg 20ga my wife bought me when we were still dating. One of the best days of my life, without question! 8*7/8" beard, 7/8" spurs 20lbs+. Oh, and the other 3 were just as big as this one, regular season opens May 1!
