in 1962 I bought my first deer rifle, Remington 700 in 308, first year they made them...20" barrel.

I've killed lots of deer with it and have others, including my son.

Well after zillion rounds the gun changed from a 1"  shooter to a 4-5" group.  the barrel was shot out.

My son killed his first deer with that rifle, in 308, with my light reloads, when he was 12 years old.

My son is 42 and my grand son is 9 years old.  I expect GS will hunt with his dad in another 3 years, when they gets back to the US.

I think my kid would like to have his son shoot his first  deer with that family rifle.  So I'm going to rebarrel it with a light weight 20" barrel.  It is a short action.

Question:  should I rebarrel it to original 308  OR a more appropiate cartridge for youth (like 243/250/260).   should I just go with 'tradition' and do 308?  or something more suited to a youth?

Very hard to better a 308 or 243.
Maybe a 6.5 swede or 7 mm/08, both very capable and not huge recoil.

I think I would go with .308. Not because I think it is the best caliber for a kid to start out on, but if you used it as a .308, his dad used it as a .308, he uses it as a .308 etc. etc.

I'm kinda sentimental that way. I hope that rifle is used for many generations to come.

I think the same as Wing.  Stay with 308.

Bear, I have a Rem 700 SA at Hart right now getting re-worked. It was a 243, already have one and don't need 2 so I had to make a decision. I went with 260, but 7-08 and 308 were strongly considered. I have 3 rifles currently chambered in the Lord's Caliber...308! Honestly, if you don't want to start from scratch collecting components and such, put her right back to the original. hard to improve on that.

I'm thinking a E W Shaw 308 barrel to about the original taper.

It is really imposible to beat the 260 Rem.  that has been my hunting companion since my open heart surgery, light 5# and if you hit it is dies right there.

In sorting brass this week discovered I had more 308 brass than anything else.  So I'll go with 308 and have some thing to shoot with lots of reloads, till jack is 12.

What else would it be used on besides deer?

.243 & .308 are very common calibers...7-08 is gonna die and .260 is dead, not that they are not excellent rounds, if you reload.  6.5 Creedmor is a good-un, and using the "Crystal-BAll", I'm guessing that it will stick around.

If deer is the biggest thing that it will be used on....243 or 6.5, unless you reload.  If you reload, .260 or .243.

My 42 year old son reloads a lot, has everything needed for 6-8 cartridges.  But in the last 8 years he gained 4 kids, and has been living overseas.  Not sure if he will have the time/desire when/if he returns.

If near I can surely reload...but at sometime GS will be on his own so  308 makes sense.

Good story Bear of a fine rifle/caliber. I was going to say 7mm/08 (I have 2 & like the round) but the sentimentality and common cartridge .308 changed my mind.

My son used my Dad's Rem 600/.308 when he started deer hunting at 12. He was small for his age then & after he wacked his forehead from recoil (scoped gun) at shooting bench, I made some "light" loads. Not sure but think maybe a 130gr Hornady spire point...not remembering the powder load. Anyway, by calculation it cut the recoil down by at least 30%...again didn't look it up...guessing. Anyway it was easier for him to handle. He still has that rifle today. Maybe takes it out 1 or 2 days some seasons...with full power 150gr loads.

I have a shotgun that was my Grandpa's and a rifle that was my Dad's. I don't shoot either of them often but I do like taking them hunting once in a while.
