Years ago (54), I bought 25 Herters red plastic 20 shell cartridge boxes, as with most herters stuff  great price they have served me fine for range and BG hunting.

For the last 20 years I've been hunting PDs alot.  and a lot of shooting.  So I bought some 100 round  plastic boxes.  Now I know they are just to heavy to carry into the field.  thinking 50 round boxes would be perfect.

Also thought of heavy freezer bags.

thoughts.

I use the 50 round boxes. They seem to be a good trade off between having enough ammo and being too heavy.

I use zip lock sandwich bags when I am working on a load. I load 5 rounds of each powder charge and put them in a bag with the load written on it with a sharpie.

It keeps me organized.

GEORGE LEONARD HERTER...nearly everything in the catalog was "MODEL PERFECT" something or other.
Bear I too have many of the Herter's red and white plastic 20rd rifle boxes. Bought lots them in the early 1970's. Mail order. Herter's main business was in Waseca, MN a but south of the twin cities area, about a 4+ hr drive from up here...hence the mail order part.

Mine are still in perfect condition after all these yrs of usage. Also, have some for handgun ammo & shot-shell boxes too, perfect for the duck blind as they didn't disintegrate like the paper boxes. Any color you want as long as it was RED or WHITE (actually more a translucent pearl type color).

Also, bought red & white loading trays too, still use them. Many of those loading trays were 10cents each. What a bargain. Also used umpteen Herters Chalace 12ga shot-shell Wads-red and white for 20ga. Used for trap shooting mostly.

Thanks bear for a trip down.............. Memory/Nostalgia Lane

I bought 10 of those shotshell boxes.  painted them green with house paint.  After 40+ years of use they show some red and green, but never leaked.  UV didn't hurt them either.

Had a few herters loading tray/blocks.  they got oil messy...put them in the dishwasher....they melted....mess

I remember reading Herters catalogs that my uncle had. Lenard had some pretty funny stuff in his catalogs.

I used a Herters press for all my reloading up until my son wanted to start reloading. I got a new Rockchucker and gave hum my Herters.

An old, now long gone, friend of mine used to say "Reading the HERTER'S catalog was better than a dime novel".  I think he was right.

I actually had a thick Herter's catalog until about 15 years ago when I gave it to my 80 year old fishing buddies as he had memories from hiss youth.

As a kid, I learned to hunt, fish, trap and read from Herter's catalog (Waseca, MN) and a fisshing catalog company Netcraft (Toledo, OH).  Both sold a clear plastic funnel that you inserted into a large mason jar to make the world's best minnow trap.  I never caught a minow or even a crab in that stupid device baited with bread crumbs!  can I still get my money back???

I still have a couple old Herter's catalogs.....even with the prices of the day back when......the stuff was still cheap even for the economy then.

U-9    is it??

they 'renamed everthing.  think those are Argeentine mausers with some other mauser things like floor plates and they did turn down the bolt handles and tap  IIRC.  first rifle build I got involved with was  a U-9  herters.

Don't know that Herters used any Argentine Mauser guns and the U9 seems to be a BSA product from England.

A little history on the Herters J9 actions:

According to my 1971 edition of Bolt Action Rifles by Frank De Haas, the early J9 actions which Herters began selling @ 1965 were a close copy of the FN Commercial Mauser and were actually stamped "Made in Germany".

In the 1967 Herters catalog, the J9 is described as being made by Zavodi Crvena Zastava and were marked "Made in Yugoslavia" with the lettering Herter's M-XK-3. Zastava is the same Yugoslav firearms company which made the Mark X actions, barreled actions, and complete rifles which Interarms began importing in 1969.

As stated earlier, the Herters U9 actions were made by BSA in England and differed cosmetically from the J9 actions.- BCB

Well mine has No markings of any kind.
I have used some Swedish 98 parts action bolts and ejector. The floor plate and follower is a Siamese Mauser part. But I guess, according to the gunsmith I had help me mate up the barrel said the bold release is absolutely Herters J9.Shocked

Beside the Herters I have some MTM.  I like the double latch on the Plano.

That 100 round Magnum  MTM you showed, I have.  When full of 416 mags with 400 grain bullets  it is a LOAD to carry with the handle.   Strictly for storage, not a field box.
