Since the gov closed my private outdoor range, I've been reloading.  No chance to develope, as no testing permitted.  And It might be monthss.

looking components, I was checking bullet prices on-line.  416mag I don't keep more than a box on hand as I use different loads for Lion, cape buffalo, moose, griz and elk.  so my 416 bulley stash on-shelf is low.

WOW 3 bucks for a bullet!!!!  I never felt any advantage to the shooter using "Premium" bullets.  Hornady, remington, Sierra  are fine, never failed to kill what I hit.

Going BG hunting is $$$ so saying a $100 on bullets doesn't seem needed.  But I just feel I'm being ripped off.

Funny you should mention that Bear. I just came down from my reloading room after doing a quick look over my...stash. Seems I have alot more of somethings I didn't think I had, and not so much of others. It does look like when this craze is over I will have to restock on certain powders. I'm not out, but I don't have my buffer I am used to. All my local stores that I used to get powder from are all closed up. 3 of them in the last 2yrs, gone. Maybe if I travel this summer I will keep an eye out for some shops, or put an online order in somewhere.

Wow, $3.00 per bullet? That's insane.

All except one rifle I have has shot Sierra bullets really well. I have had the best accuracy from Pro Hunters, but I rally prefer Gamekings.

They all seem to be reasonably priced, but then again I don't have any big magnums.

Wing, I really like the Game kings as well. They usually shoot very good, and are reasonably priced, and they kill deer like Thor's Hammer! I have used them in 243 (100gr), 257 (117), 284 (140, 150, 160) and 308 (150, 165) to take deer and have never had a failure. I do shoot some Speers and have taken deer with those, although not as many as the Sierras. I have used Hornadys close to as much as the Sierras, the plain Interlocks work very well on game I've found. In general, the IL don't seem to shoot as well as the Sierras...generally speaking, but do shoot good. I gave up on the Ballistic tips and SST due to the huge amount of meat damage they do. They shoot very well, but all things equal, I'll take the Game Kings or Pro Hunters.

The SST is my go to bullet for everything, elk to deer to PDs.  just worrks well.  reasonably priced and high BC that shoots sub MOA.  with hear/lung shots very little meat is wasted; but I'm too old to track/drag even abd extra 60 yards.

I'm sure Sierra and Speer have similiar bullets.  seems most guys go with super Premium bullets...the power of ads.

Bear, I agree with that, marketing is powerful. If it wasn't for marketing we would all be shooting a 222, 30-06 and 300H&H! I just can't see where an expensive bullet would kill a deer any deader than what the Sierras or Hornadys do. Now, some day when I get to chase after an elk or moose, I will for sure have a bonded or partition bullet loaded. I believe in matching bullet to the job. The heavy big boned, thick skinned animals deserve more consideration...for the most part. Even more so if the bullet is being pushed harder/faster by a bigger cartridge. But as far as deer, my 308 loaded with a 150gr SGK is absolutely A-1 deer medicine here in the north woods! A 140gr 284 and 117gr 257 dropped Montana mule deer without a quiver as well.

Even in the non-premium brands, the manufacturers design bullets for specific uses.  I shot a cape buffalo(Hornady 400 gr), Moose (Speer 370 gr), Elk (PPI 286gr)  all one shot kills without premium bullets.

I can understand how people spending $$$$ on a BG trip might feel comfortable buying the most expensive brand.  Local backyard deer hunters are all to often trying to cover their less than great marksmanship.

As you know PA hunter prefer HEAVY bullets for their little whitetails; greem/yellow 180grains are the standard even though those are made for elk and big bears.

Also the amount of shooting/practice makes premium very poor choice.  I shoot 1000-3000 rounds at targets for every bullet fired at BG.

Premium bullet:

My buffalo/bear bullet:

And the Hornady is a better bullet double jacketed GM jacket over stainless steel jacket, over lead core.

I like them both but I like the higher BC of the Gameking if my gun shoots them more accurately.

I have never shot a Moose, but I have shot many-a-Elk. I have used Sierra Pro Hunters on most of them.

This year I shot my Elk with a 6.5 130 grain Sierra Gamechanger. It ran about 20 yards.

The plaim O'l Sierras work just fine on Elk.
