My grab and go kit has been a 30 carbine and a few hundred rounds.  this was based upon if SHTF I'd grab it and head to my camp.

But as we get older, maybe we need a hunker down gun?

Thinking a M1a (aka semi-M14) would be best.  Maybe a 1-4x scope in flip mounts loaded with FMJ.  with the stronger 308 round and FMJ it would stand off any thing.

Really depends on what you plan to hunt,
what you think could be hunting you
and terrain/distances.

12 gauge is my all arounder, 12 gauge from hell if tactical armor is involved! My hunker down would be my AR-10 though. Range, power, and with AP's even light armor. I always have a K or 2 for it stashed around the premise.

hunkering down program....for survival/food a 12ga pump gun with slug, buck and shot for ammo.

for self defense from 2 legged predators than a good AR 5.56 with appropriate ammo/quantities

presently storing son's gun collection so with mine got just about all need for hunker down.  Never thought of that; so the 416 with steel jackets is good on body and vehicle armor....12 ga  skitter gun at each window.  9mms stashed around.  sounds safe.

I don't worry about the gov't...I worry about the citizens. Thinking of the defectives that picked/voted for democrat candidates.

Bunkers are relatively cheap and inexpensive these days. Also a great place to relax on hot days and enjoy the wine cellar/bourbon hide.

When I was a kid we called them an air raid shelter. A few still around in back yards.

I think if I was going to hunker down and needed to keep people from getting into my supplies, my first choice would be a .308 bolt gun with an AR with a whole bunch of mags loaded with 5.56-.223 close by.

My thinking is I would have a lot more reach with a .308 and more accuracy. If they got close or their was a large group I would be better off with 30 round magazines and quick followup shots.
