Dead Mule any one use one?
I made my version. I took a piece of PVC pipe ,heated one and and pressed it in to my new plastic stock to get it to the right shape. I had an all lead tube about 5" long it has one end closed off with a lead cap. The PVC pipe pressed in to the lead tube. I drilled a hole 3/8" from the end of each tube. I used a Aluminum rivet to hook then together open ends together. Used some plastic over the rivet to keep the lead shot from getting in to the plastic tub, I did not want the noise. I filled the lead tub 3/4 full of #9 lead shot and put felt shot shell spacer in each end. I used carbon fiber and resin to "Glue" it all in to the stock. After it all set up I filled the stock with Fiberglass Isolation to deaden the sound of the stock dragging against tree branches and grass. A big glob of silicon on the back of the limb saver let that dry and use to help hold it in place. The unit can't move but the the shot can roll in the lead tube. It added just shy of two pounds to the very end of the stock. The plastic stock is a pound lighter then the wood one so it's actually a net one pound heaver. The gun was 8 pounds so now it will be 9 plus a scope/ rings/ sling/bedding and 4 bullets. Still will be lighter then my 6mm it is right at 12 pounds fully decked out and loaded. Will it work? It just can't hurt for sure. |

I have one for my 870 shotgun. Remington use to supply them with their 870 WingMaster guns in the 1960s. I use it when shooting trap. Mine has a slight flange so it can be used in the mag tube as both a weight and a shell plug.
Some of these had thick oil to dampen the shot movement and absorb energy.

It's all Fiberglassed in now wing. I'll pull the limbsaver off and take a pic of what you can see.
Just think of a lead cylinder filled with loose shot on a stick. The thought is, it will add weight to the very back end to help off set the barrel weight and the loose shot , in my mind ,should slow the recoil to my shoulder.

OK. That kinda makes me see a picture in my mind. I don't have anything that kicks hard enough to need more than a recoil pad.

They've been around forever. I've seen quite a few over the years in big bores and in big magnums in the fad of as light as possible chassis. Sure they were nice to carry in the field, but the recoil was brutal. So, drilling the buttstocks and filling the cavities with lead or in some of the old ones, vials of mercury. Doesn't take much to add a pound to a buttstock and a half to a forearm. Came across a 405 winny about twenty years ago that weighed about ten pounds. Son of the original owner said even the added weight and a decel pad it kicked like a mule.

Felt recoil is relative...
This has big recoil but even as small as I am it's no big deal. You Just have to shoulder it right from the beginning. AND don't be leaning up against a fence pole or tree. I put it on my bathroom scale and it's just a titch over 8 pounds loaded with out a scope and sling. One of my lighter guns, kinda nice.

Never give a big gun room to move toward you. Tight contact with you shoulder (not arm) tames them. they just 'shove' you, not pound you.
