Well, deer hunting has changed for me over the years. Then i grabbed my rifle and just went out.
Now, the preparation is my most enjoyable. Today I put my classic Mustang in the garage for the year. Behind it close to the garage door I assembled my 'deer stuff'. Including: fiberglass sled, 4 ground blinds, snow and fall cammo, chairs, shooting sticks, etc. Now depending upon weather and location I can grab and walk to SUV. I hunt 2 states and about 6 locales. some with x-bow some with rifles, one with slug. So now...i need to get my NYS rifle moving for next week. will be 30-40 ruger single shot #3. Need to load tomorrow and sught-in friday. Should I shoot 185 grain cast or 170 jacketed sierra flat nose. Range 20-60 yards.

I guess you meant to type in 30-40 U.S. Govt or Krag. Anyway either bullet will do the job I guess and most likely you will be shooting well under 100yds out there. What sights on that Ruger #3?

I'm not sure why, but I almost always use heavy for caliber bullets. As long as they are accurate.

Yep, 30-40 Krag. In the Ruger it can be loaded to 300 h&H levels.
After last year hunting real close (can't drag critter far) when I hunted with a 4-12x, I changed scopes, not enough field of view. So I have a Leupold 1-4x...took it off my 416 DGR. unbelievable field of view at 30 yards. The 30-40 with the flat nose 170 grain has probably killed 15+ deer for me, out to 350 it is deadly.

If the 170's are accurate That's what I'd use. Definately enough for deer.

Actually, the 170 loaded to max will, and haave, taken out both shoulders and exited with plenty of damage. I sort of ant to 'tame it down just a tad,
